I've been using this brute for like 10 years. The brown stuff at the bottom doesnt come off even with a stiff brush. Is it time for a new one?

I'd keep using the original container.

Have you tried soaking it in vinegar for about 24 hours then going at it with a stiff brush? If that doesn't work I'd probably replace it.

ive added bleach for a thorough cleaning sitting a few days.
Im sure vinegar would do the same

Thanks for the feedback everyone I've tried bleach and scrubbing, but haven't soaked it for a few days yet. I'll give that a shot and probably just retire it if it doesn't come clean after that.

I had the same thing. I used bleach and vinegar and it came off a little. A good soak with citric acid, and a stiff brush finally got it taken care of.

BUT, at 10yrs, I'd say you get your money out of that container.

Vinegar, or even stronger-pool acid, would break this buildup apart enough that you'd be able to clear it out of there. Should leave you with a spotless container.

I really hope you did this outside with respiratory protection. That's how you make chlorine gas. Potentially deadly.

If, after all this, you still can't get it off, why are you concerned about it? Its obviously not soluble.

I wouldn't worry about it.

True, the brown crud doesn't visibly come off when I mix, but I guess I'm concerned about what might be leeching out at a microscopic/chemical level. Honestly I have no idea what the brown crud is so I figured I'd ask about it

Here you go :)

You want the section entitled, " Solid Residues Remaining After Preparing Artificial Seawater "
