Hello and......

So the first question I have to ask is what kind of lights are you running along with the flow in your display. SPS LOVE both of them and they also need a little nitrate and phosphate to survive. Are you new in the saltwater world? If so, I would read as much about this hobby as you can and learn as much as you can from it. You came to the right place to learn and get advice so feel free to ask away.

Hi David and firstly welcome to R2R!

My tank runs with Nitrate at 10-16ppm and SPS are fine, BUT, for the first 12 months of the tanks life I struggled to stop them browning out.

Then when the tank reached 12 months old, I had no problem whatsoever with SPS so in my case the tank 'matured' and I can keep most things now. I don't know what happens when tanks mature. All the normal parameters didn't change so...…...

If you decide to do sps, it's not like you should go crazy and buy $1000 of sps coral and drop it in the tank. Buy a couple frags of something you like, keep the cost reasonable, and see how they do in a month or two. Just take your time. Everybody wants to rush and too many end up with disaster.

Always remember this:
Nothing good happens quickly in a marine aquarium!

Just my OPINION folks...dont be flaming me bc of my opinion

IMO....DONT DO IT!

SPS is the work of devil .......LOL

But seriously with SPS you'll get emotionally attached to them...then BAM. one parameter (like too much Alk, NO3, PO4) goes outta of whack and all that love and care DIES in front of your eyes quickly.

And when SPS starts to die....there's not a DANG thing you can do about it. WCs, QTs only lead to downward spiral death and die off in most, but not all, cases.

I lost over a $2000 worth of Acros I bought over 3yrs.....and within 24hrs of my Calc Reactor spewing Alk Carbonate into the tank that the Acros couldn't handle .....by the next day ALL white boney branches in 24hrs. You could hear me scream 2miles away

I seriously almost took my aluminum baseball bat to the whole tank in a fit of rage.

I've sworn off all SPS since then and I'm a much HAPPIER reefer with LPS and softies. Gods honest truth

.
