I'm going barebottom. I'm sucking out the sand. What should I do with it. I do have a 40g breeder I use as a refuge. Should I go dsb in it or what. Time is ticking cause the sand has been in there for over a year. It's really alive.

Unless you clean the sand, I would NOT reuse it. It will release all the detritus that has been collected in it. If you wash it well and put it in the fuge, that can work. But DSB have kind of fallen out of favor I think.

I put old sand in a BIG bucket (5g or bigger) and outside I stick the end of the garden hose in and move it around. The first water to overflow the bucket will look awful. but after a few minutes of moving the hose around in the bucket, the overflow will clear. Then drain the bucket as best you can. After that, it's ready to use.

I do the same thing. You need to get all the muck out of it. I do it until it runs clear. Takes a while, but then I do a light bleach and de-bleach. If you change your mind you will have good clean sand to use again, make frag plugs, sell or use in the yard.
