Tips and Tricks on Creating Amazing Aquascapes.

Zip ties: 90% did, there are still some attached to the base and one or two rocks. They will eventually be covered..... I hope

I hated my rock scape for the first 18 months my tank was running. In that time I did 2 complete overhauls and countless major/minor tweaks. Went from rock wall to 2 islands ( 1 lg, 1 sm) to 3 islands and back to 2 equal sized. I was never happy. Then I started working to get custom vidarock scape made. I read all the horror stories about the frustrations people had with the process as well as how long it took, but went for it. It took a 3+ months and a lot of phone calls and emails, but in the end it was completely worth it. I absolutely love my rockscape now. I get giddy every time I walk into the room.

Could you post it? I looked back for a pic, may have missed it? Thanks

Made a short video, it shows it off better. The rock and coral have been in place for 2 months. Still in frag mode. :)

Sorry about the shaky, color changing cell phone video.

@ chefjpaul - That is pretty awesome work right there! Lots of time and thought went into that sculpture.

Nice chef! that looks great!

Colored zip ties works be cool. I wonder if RIT dye is reef safe?

Is there already a good commercially available dye for rocks? A spray or something thick that could be brushed on in different layers to give color variation. One thing I wasn't sure I was going to like, but ended up loving about the vidarock was their coloration. I almost opted to not have them do it, very glad I did.

Did you guys happen to watch the video I posted? Tell me the purple colored rock does not look better than the white corner corner piece that you see at the 42 second mark. I added that corner piece a week after the main structure was in place. The main structure may look like its coralline covered, but less than 10 pct of is covered with it. I posted another video when I first put the stuff in the tank and you can see what the raw purple coloring looks like. It looked good, but now after a short time it's mottled with the real stuff and looks awesome. They don't paint it a uniform purple, it's brushed or sprayed on at varying intensities. Really looks nice.

Sure in a year it's all the same, but to me the off white and soon brown diatoms will cover it looks ugly. Maybe if the entire tank was the same it wouldn't be so bad, but for me to have this one off white piece it doesn't look that appealing. If I could dye it, I would .

Here are my 2 tanks. First is a standard 120g and second is a 180 bowfront

about aquascaping and how you design your aquarium, I think it depends on some factors:
1- tank size
2- tank kind (reef or FOWLR)
3- the fish or reefs you are gonna or love to keep
when your tank is a sps dominated one, then you should create good space for them to expand.
I love to create a mountain in the tank like coral reefs in the nature and also I love to keep different kind of corals together!
this is my new tank that I lunched 4 month ago

Very usefull thread. i have to start doing mine now. Thank you very much for sharing.

Water change weekend anyways so good timing. Guess it's good also cause I have not liked my scape and I was getting ready to make a large stick purchase.

I would like to do the two point design like in the original post but the over flow box is center back (hard to see in the poor quality photo). Any ideas?
