Hello, pretty new to the saltwater reef Tank game ive kept many fresh water aquariums but I’m on my first reef and I’m in the process of setting it up and I purchased a current USA marine orbit light and it seems to be great But only emits blue light when plugged in. Now it’s fully customizable but how do i know how much red light to add to the blues?

Some info from you would be helpful.

How long has your tank been running?
How big is it (gallons & dimensions)?
What do you have (or plan to have) in the tank? Specifically what basic group of corals (soft, zoas, lps, sps)?

In general, the Current line of leds is either for VERY shallow tanks, or for fish only tanks. The leds are only about 0.5 watts and do not penetrate water very deep with enough light for many corals.

You said/asked, "I purchased a current USA marine orbit light and it seems to be great But only emits blue light when plugged in. Now it’s fully customizable but how do i know how much red light to add to the blues?"

It only lights the blue leds? Half of the fixture is white leds, do they work? The red leds are FAR, FAR less important to the over all health of your tank than the blue and the white leds. Most reefers run fixtures like yours (mostly half and half blue and white with a few red and greens added in) with the blue leds at 2 times the power of the white leds, and sometimes even 3 times as much. I run my leds with the blues getting 2.5 times more power than the whites and I don't even run the reds or greens.

How much red and green you add in is almost totally unimportant as there are so few of them and they don't do much to help. The white leds emit a full range of spectrum, including red and green, along with blue, which all put together makes white.

One last question, did you buy this fixture new or used?

Thanks for the advice the tank actually isn’t up yet , trying to really take my time with this one. I literally have every thing i need to get going (even have some coral i bought sitting in a friends tank lol ) I’m doing a lot of research and i just so happened to notice that I’ve seen some lights even the higher end ones seem to emit some type of red i just didn’t really know how they’d know what percentage to do it at. I just wanted to know so that when they tank is up and running after cycling I’d have the best set up for whats going to eventually be in the tank. it’s a 40 breeder btw and the light is brand new there are whites that work just fine it’s just the blues were dominating my eyes i didn’t notice the whites. I plan to really only do things like hammers, torches, zoas, and mushrooms , lps stuff as those are the ones that really caught my eye and the light have isnt great growing sps from What i heard. Thanks a lot for the info though you gave me exactly what i was looking for

Here is a thread on the Currents. Members have posted in their light % for each color. I have two tanks and have Currents on both. One is a 75, the other is a 30. If you have any more questions let me know.
