My overflows tend to become a snail graveyard. I like my water to be a bit higher in the display, so it give the snails a way to crawl through the slats and down into the overflow.

Anyone have a creative solution to stop that?

I did the same thing and made a lid for the overflow. Multiple aquarium websites sell some if you have a rectangle or square overflow.

I'll get a picture, but the main offenders are the dwarf cerith snails. They go through the slats vs climbing over the top of the overflow.

You could always take some screen or mesh and try to secure it to the inside of the wiers to keep the from getting through but this could also become clogged over time if anything large goes through the overflow.
