jsut got into keeping coral and I have 3 different types of zoa’s arriving tomorrow, would like a little garden of them as so many reefers have. How much space is needed inbetween each frag and any other tips are appreciated !

Mines young and nothing crazy, but I just glue them to the rock with a little space between each type. I'll be adding a couple more to the rock and then a few to the bare bottom below. The not gluing thing makes no sense to me since if you let them grow at all for any length of time they're going to move from the plug to the rock, or glass anyway.

So far mine consists of WWC illuminati, utter chaos, fire and ice, people eaters/small putple no names, and, since I'm from Chicago, those whose name shall not be spoken.

Looks great !! How long have they been in ?

The closer you put them the more attention you need to pay one they grow out and start infighting. Ive had over a dozen types in my tank, but after a year of survival of the fittest it is down to half as many

The utter chaos are the oldest, and among the first corals i bought. They're about 7 months old. Started from 3 decent polyps with a few babies. And the illuminati are the newest at almost 3 months. Theyh started as 4 polyps and are now 12.

The CARs have mowed down red and blue hornets and are almost through with the dragon eyes. I have to frag like 3 a week to keep them at bay. The mass on the left are AOGs and Tyree vampires that now are hard to tell apart as they overran the rastas between them. I was taking a dozen a month to the store for credit but over the summer got lazy and they took over.

It's unavoidable unless you place them so far apart they never meet, and in that case you don't have much of a garden.

Just got to keep on top of trimming back any that threaten to overtake others completely.

oh ok I see. i was honestly under the optimistic impression of they might stop growing once they reach the other colonies lol

The nice thing is once the colonies get big the growth is sort of exponential, so if you keep on top of trimming/ pruning you get a ton of frags to trade in as a matter of tank maintenance

My experience with them is like other posters in that when conditions are favorable for them, they grow like crazy and intermix very quickly. I've seen a few polyps take over the area of a small salad plate (6" dia. or so) in just a few weeks. They are not easy to keep separated from each other. Zoanthids do prefer higher nutrient levels though, so if you keep nutrients low they grow and spread more slowly and are easier to deal with. You have to find that nutrient level sweet spot, which is difficult to do and even more difficult to maintain.
