I would never be without a mag scraper of some sort. I also have a razor blades Flipper. Excellent. I just swipe the glass any time I’m passing or looking at the tank as I hate looking through any film. Doesn’t feel like a chore doing a few seconds here and there.
Re: asterina starfish. You can pick them out by hand to try and lessen the population. However, a harlequin shrimp will hunt down and eat every last one. Trouble is, you’ve then got to feed the harli more starfish you have to buy or try and catch it to pass on to another reefer.

+1. @Hemmdog is right. I always say that my Flipper was the best "investment" I made for my tank. It takes no time at all to clean the glass.

Im willing to bet your nitrate and phosphate is on the higher side. Feed only a small amount once a day, and do weekly water changes of 20percent to slowly get it down and under control.

I also would recommend getting a flipper cleaner

Yes you need a protein skimmer. You nitrates and phosphate is probably really high, causing excessive algae growth and the coral to die. I personally use razor blades and a floor scraper from lowes to clean the glass. And I also use a mr clean magic eraser from dollar tree on the silicone joints. Just maker sure it's the original with no soap. And make sure to clean your razor blades before use

You will always need to clean the glass (or acrylic). Controlling nutrients, as others have noted, will certainly reduce but will not and should not stop algae growth. Once you have nutrients under control, it is quite easy to position some blanking strips to prevent light from spilling onto the front panel. I've been doing this on my tanks for years - I am actually surprised that more folks do not do this. It's simple and very effective.

They only look squeaky clean because we clean them right before visitors and photos .
