Tips on using H202 35% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide.

Hello All,

I am battling a bad case of hair algae and thinking of using food grade 35% hydrogen peroxide and looking for any tips and suggestions on using it. How much to use and how often, and should I dose it in the tank or target algae with syringe?
 
I would dilute that down ALOT. If you go over the recommended 1ml of 3% per 10 gallons you will see negative affects in your corals. If you do the above you shouldn’t see any negative affects. It’s a fine line you don’t want to cross.
 
I have been dosing 1ml per 10gal of the 35% and dosing it directly onto of the algae and it is just melting away.

Will help if anyone ever gets Dinos also ... sometimes my corals close up for 24-48 hours but always end up fine, zoas especially don’t like it in my tank
 
Don't.

High concentration hydrogen peroxide is dangerous to handle, getting it on your skin or eyes can do permanent damage, and the amount you need to add would be tiny to the point of being difficult to measure for many tank applications. Even the vapors are harmful, just google "msds 35% hydrogen peroxide" and you can see the material safety datasheet for that concentration of hydrogen peroxide, it's a highly corrosive organic solvent.

There is no good reason to use such a highly concentrated and dangerous solution in your tank when the normal 3% can be dosed at reasonable volumes for full effectiveness.

There are also no 'stabilizers' in any pharmaceutical hydrogen peroxide - it's a bottle hydrogen and oxygen and if you leave it in the sun or in the container for long enough, it all just becomes water (that's actually why it comes in opaque container, because light can speed the degradation to water).
 
How did h202 dosing work out for you? I believe you're using 35% and at 1 ml per 10 gal?

It was 12% (amazon) and yes around 1ml per 10g. I pulled as much as possible and then used a syringe to spot treat. It takes a while, but the peroxide does a good job at killing gha. Remember that you need to identify the source of extra nutrients or it will come back.

I just purchased the blubonic 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide and I plan to dose 1 ml per 25 gallon, atleast to start, per day to keep the algae at bay. What do you think of 35% at 1 ml per day?

Just to note: I dumped 2 empty hermit crab shells into straight 3% h202 and it did almost no damage to the gha on the shells after 24 hrs. I concluded 3% isn't strong enough. I then dropped the shells into the tank and, 24 hrs later, it's completely clean. Did the h202 need water to be effective?
 
points on peroxide 3% vs 35%:

anyone with children in a home owning 35% peroxide is in complete risk of blindness, I'm not sure which would be more dangerous for a child to have access to: concentrated battery acid or 35%, you can't believe it's danger to the eye. simply don't own it in a house that has children or curious handlers of highly caustic solutions, your algae isn't worth blindness

adults: better wear them eye protections when handling. I have been cheating with it/not handling it with anything other than my reading glasses on and a drop kicked up a few years ago when pouring, landed on the bottom of my polycarb lenses under where my eye would be, and warp ruined that droplet spot.

that being said, 3% is baby water and I only use 35% when dealing in rock algae because it truly buzzsaws it. the stuff is available over the counter from any health food store, which is insane, so it's not like we can't talk about it/freely available here in the US. they dilute it and use it effectively as a fruit prep wash or a bath soak, for humans :)

better be careful with it/warning.

I would never add it nor 3% into tank water to beat algae, because we're on year 14 of algae testing in reef tanks and that's the method most likely to not work and to regrow the algae as soon as you stop the dosing, and the algae habituates to it anyway requiring you to add more. the waste that brought on the algae isn't handled by inputting peroxide.

don't add it to tank water unless you're on the tail end of the worst unbeatable dinos battle and there are no children in the home. don't own it if there are children in the home. it's an unlocked chemical gun you'd be leaving about. Go buy an amazon lock box with a combo and store it in that if we must.

I only use 35% on rocks I took out of the tank to work externally, you would remove your rocks, take a knife and scrape off the gha first like surgery, leaving none. leaving a clean spot you rinsed away the scraping with saltwater.

then you put peroxide on the clean spot, after you've scraped it, to truly burn holdfasts, that way works. you'd then clean the filthy sandbed full of waste fueling the original GHA issue forcing you to try peroxide, that waste is the cause of the symptoms of having wrecked algae in most cases, in others its way too bright lights chasing PAR levels someone read were ideal + bad topoff water. ( high tds )

As @brandon429 noted, be very careful! I used gloves and glasses and made my wife aware NOT to use it for anything. I keep all my reef chemicals and supplies in bins where they cannot be confused for anything else.

I did not 'dose', so I cannot give you any input in that regard. I applied it directly to the gha with a syringe. All pumps should be off with no water movement. Keep it away from any corals, etc. as it will kill them. After application, wait until the bubbles stop (around 30 min or so), then you can turn the pumps back on.
