Tips & Tricks to Make One Sigh with Relief

While responding to a member who was feeling a bit down about the amount of work it took to care for his multiple tanks, I realized that newer members and even old-salties might be able to learn a new trick or two to make routine or tedious maintenance tasks easier. I think the willingness of R2R members to share personal experiences is what makes this such a great site. Let’s keep that spirit going by sticking to the topic and leaving any debates about whether to quarantine or not, prophylactically treat or not for another forum.

Because I run multiple tanks, on average around 5 to 6 at a time, some big, some small, I try to make the process of tank maintenance care as pain-free as possible. I have fish that love to eat my CUC, so I needed a way to replace more frequently. I now quarantine inverts in a small Fluval · 13.5 gallons. The Fluval is also where I keep my pod breeding population--easy care all in one tank. In truth, I only do a water change in the Fluval about once every month to 3 months depending on the livestock. After 78 days in quarantine, I'm ready to replace the needed CUC again.

But the best maintenance upgrade I adopted about a year ago was to install a turn the knob siphon hose setup to drain tanks and a separate turn the knob fill the tanks saltwater mixing station setup for RODI water. No more carrying buckets for me! Big…Big Sigh of Relief!

Target feeding my corals used to be such a hassle because I had to stick my hand in the tank to reach my coral with a turkey baster or the two different coral feeding tubes I'd purchased had openings too small to easily suck up or eject larger pieces of food easily as was needed for some of my coral. Big sigh of relief when I started using them, and they can be bought for only a few bucks each at Walmart, so it doesn't hurt the pocketbook to have a different one for each tank...much cheaper than the food wands I had purchased.
