Hi,

I’m attempting to grow more tisbe. I used some fry powder food and now there are lot of particulate matter on sides and bottom of the bottle. I have air rate about 1-2 bubbles/second. I stopped using fry food and added some nano green water.

My question is do I just keep things as is or save the clear water, rinse the bottle so there is no particles settling on the bottom.

How many days does it take for these tisbe to grow?

I am not using any lighting either. Just indirect kitchen lights at night.

How long have you had them in there? I tend to harvest them every two weeks or so. They seem to grow a bit slow at first but once you start getting decent numbers the population grows exponentially.

After I harvest them I clean out as much crud as I can, I'm basically just taking out the big chunks, lots of pods like to live in it so I leave some of it when I fill the bottle back up with water.

5 days. So I should add more green water after 14 days? I have about 8oz now.

Thanks

I have seen some posts of Tisbe culture tanks that have Cheato Algae. Does the cheato stay alive without light?

Tisbe should not have direct light?

I honestly dont use that much phyto on mine I only put just enough to have a slight green hue to the water. I supplement the feeding by adding a fish flakes. I have been doing it this way because its easier to filter out the pods without worrying about catching too much detritus. I would share a short clip but my cell is dead.

I have them across a window so they get plenty of indirect light through the day. Chaeto needs light but I assume it would do fine with a long period of indirect lighting, so I would place it close to a window if possible..

Thank you

I will try those nylon scrubbing pad instead of cheato.

I understand there are many ways to culture these. Since they are microscopic, it is hard to gauge if they are thriving or dying.

I notice some use dark green, lots of phyto.
I tried this and got clumps of dead phyto settling on the bottom. Most likely from not using light.
My understanding now, light to mainly keep the phyto alive longer I suppose.

Fish flakes also produce more solid waste?

Get rid of the water. I would terminate the culture before the water fouls. You can save the copepods by sieving or straining them out. There’s a wide range of sizes and it’s best to have multiple sizes so that you’ll be able to separate adults from copepodites and naupllii, as well as starting a new culture and when harvesting. You should get ones that you’ll be able to stack so that you can just pour the water and the sieves will sort by size. Very convenient.
I have some research on copepods that goes over a little biology, but mostly how to culture. Each species is unique to themselves and each have different dietary needs. What will work with one species of copepod will not work with others.
Send me a on with your email and I can send you some things. I also have some cool pics, video and info on my Facebook group page @PaulsPodsAZ. You can post your own things on here as well so others can help you out. There are a couple of marine biologists that follow my page as well and can answer question for you if I don’t know. If you want to be successful with this, research is a must....I just want to reiterate that.
Wanted to tell you that I make my own Sieves and have many sizes of aquaculture mesh for other projects as well, such as a copepod nauplii harvester that I’m currently working on. I have the pdf that goes into making this as well. But I do make them for people that want a cheap sieve. I only charge for materials and postage so they’re only 10$ and even cheaper for the whole set because of postage. Normally they’re around 20-30$. Send me a PM if anyone needs.

Don’t feed fish flakes. Just use live phytoplankton. Find out the specific strain of phytoplankton they eat, in this case tisbe can be fed with Dunaliella or Rhodomonas or both. Reed Mariculture’s,tire also makes some feeds as well. Only be aware that certain species of copepods will require you to grow live phyto. In the case of Apocylcopse Panememsis, they can be raised on Reed Maricultures RG Complete or RotiGrow Onestep. The difference being RG Complete has an ammonia and chlorine binder, chlorAm-X.

The light should be on a 12/12 and isn’t to keep the phyto alive it’s because pods do a little better with some light. I always use translucent buckets too. It’s what I was taught by a marine biologist.
I want to stress the fact that you’ll want to do your researching before investing in copepods. They’re not cheap and you won’t succeed by guessing or by following anecdotal advice. Google scholar also has some neat research abstract or even The Who,e study for reference. A great tool for reefers to get the correct information.

I respect that you have taken your time to do your research and thank you for your contribution to this thread but I think you are making this seem like its an exact science. It's honestly not that difficult to grow a large population from a "handful" of pods. I started my culture with 1/2" of water from a Poseidon's Feast jar (added the rest to tank), 4-5 fish flakes, roughly 200 ml of OceanMagik phyto, and a gallon of NSW. This hobby requires you to be very detailed and technical in many aspects, this is definitely not one of them.. lol. The point of doing this is to have something interesting and fun to do there is no point in making it harder than it has to be. Anyway, I encourage you and the OP to experiment with different methods (It's called the scientific method afterall :p) to see what develops the best results for your particular needs.

Note that did not harvest the pods or cleaned the water before taking this pic. I usually keep the water a little green though.

Wow, those look huge, are those Tisbe pods?

I am on day 9 with my tisbe. Just phyto, sponge filter and heater. Ambient light from kitchen lights whenever they are turned on.
They are definitely multiplying :-)

You mentioned fish flakes. Have you tried with fish flakes only? I’m curious if Tisbe will thrive with just fish flakes or fry powder.
They thrive in display tank, I doubt many dose phyto in their DT. Maybe phyto increases success rate of Tisbe.

If I can avoid having to make phyto and just use fish flakes, that would be great.

I could get some tisbe and start another small container with just fish flakes, see if they survive.

Have you used Apocylops? I see hardly any posts regarding these pods, mainly tisbe and tigger.

Yes, for me it is just learning and fun, nothing mass production nor do I have such funds for even their food source.

So do you harvest every 2 weeks or it doesn’t really matter? As long as there are still some in the culture tank, they will continue to populate.

Good to hear!

They are a mix of tisbe and tigriopus. I actually have a batch that are only being feed fish flakes right now and they seem to be doing just fine. It doesn't really matter how often you harvest them. I usually just do it when I see that there is tons of them in there.

Thanks. Good to know just fish flakes works too.
Do you just smash it up and sprinkle or do you mix in water, pour it in but not the larger particles?

One issue I’m running into, the phyto goes clear, I add more phyto but I am running out of room to add more green water.

What is your SG for pod tank?

I was reading about Tig pods, (1.0045- 1.0784 S.G.). Is this why they don’t thrive in the DT?

I culture a few types of copepods including tisbe. I culture tisbe in a 5 gallon bucket with air and feed live brown phytoplankton. The culture is thick with juveniles. They reproduce quickly!
