I just noticed some Necrosis on the bottom of one of my birdnest. Emerald crabs like to hang out so I dont know if they are the culprit. Just noticed the Necrosis and I have had the crabs for a couple months.

Necrosis? Usually they just turn white from lack of light.

Shaded and/or lack of flow. Birdsnest need lots of flow to penetrate the dense growth as to flush all the debris out from the center and provide food and oxygen to the inner core.

Does that usually cause Necrosis?

Yes but usually only in the lower and inner part. If it starts to spread to the outer branches then it could be something else.

Ok. I only question it because my other birdnest is white underneath but just bleached. The polyps and flesh are still there.

I will keep an eye on it.

Hey @h2oh2o

I am agreeing with Adam and yc, BUT

That branch on the top left kinda worries me. It doesn’t look like just die off from shade, but I am also not great on disease ID

@pathot984 and @Peace River are if they don’t get tired of me asking them for help.

I am probably going to remove it tomorrow and frag it up. Want some?

It’s a really nice piece, I appreciate it. I still have not settled on my final lighting so chances are I will wind up killing it. I have been going back and forth with my t5, hd 52 and hybrid t5 and hd.

Maybe some other Charlotte peeps around.

How long did it take to lose that tissue? Looks like necrosis to me and not from shading. When shaded the tissue turns white but this looks like the tissue is falling off. I would probably frag it and start over.

Looks like something is irritating it and causing necrosis. Honestly, I'd just leave it alone. I have a cheap green BN I keep low in the tank and sometimes shrooms grow right up to it, so the edges of the shroom irritate and kill the tissue there, but it just keeps growing. Unless it's spreading fast, I'd be inclined to leave it alone.

Well.....she gone. I wanted to clear it out anyways for other corals coming in.
