To big of a skimmer?

Right now I have an essence 130 skimmer on my Red Sea 170. It came with the tank when I bought from a guy.

I only run the skimmer like 3 times a week for maybe 10 to 12 hours.

I feel like this is to big of a skimmer for my tank.

The tank has 5 smaller fish and corals.

Should I get a smaller one or just leave it?

If it is pulling good skimmate then it’s not too big. The size of the skimmer has more to do with bioload and not water volume.

I run the same skimmer 24/7 in my 170.

My rule of thumb is that if the skimmer holds more water than your display it’s too big ....

I don't think it's an issue. If it's pulling good skimmate out then its fine. It's all about the bioload not really about "is it to big". You just have more room to put more in your tank is all!

Leave it. Run it 24x7 too. It does more than you know... just tune it to skim wet so that it does not produce much skimmate, but still does gas exchange.

Don't forget that a skimmer also provides oxygenation for the tank water, I would run it 24/7. If you don't want skimmate, dial the water level down.

Keep it. Wet skimming will sort of work as a water change. Be sure to check your salinity. It will also help with oxygen in the water.
