I was looking to upgrade my skimmer and was going to get either a aquamaxx co3 rated for 270 heavy load-450 light load, I also came across a cheap aquamaxx cone 5 rated for 550gal.. is it bad to have a skimmer that big for a 125gal with a 75gal sump?

Bad? Not really, but if it's too big of neck diameter you will experience irregular skimming. It will skim perfect but then the tank does not have enough "skimmables" to maintain a stable foam head and the skimmer appears to be doing nothing until there is enough in the water to skim again. Not bad exactly, just something to be aware of. If you adjust the skimmer again during the die down you will have it puking out the lid when the DOCs build up again!
The ratings are all over the place from manufacturers, I don't know the neck diameter of those skimmers and can't give advise between that brand. It also depends on bioload and feeding, but just wanted to give you a heads up if the above happens! I had it happen and it really upset me until I figured out what was going on.

I feed pellets and flakes in am and frozen pe and lrs at night. Medium bio load trigger, harlequin tusk, big kole tang, big Mel wrasse, butterfly, and other smaller fish. And it's a reef tank. Minus the snails bc they never make it 2 minutes in my tank lol. So do u suggest the smaller one then?
This is the aquamaxx cone 5. I am only looking for something this big because in 2 years I will have a 300 10foot tank. And don't want to have to buy another skimmer. But I want it to be able to work properly for my 125 till the time comes that I do get a 300
Oh yea, in that case you will be fine! Like I said at worst it might not foam 100% of the time, but it's not a big deal if you know about it and don't think something is wrong. I would get the larger one if you are going to have a larger system soon. It doesn't look crazy huge.
I ended up going with the aquamax ConeS Q3 rated max of 420 to 240gal. And I'll tell you watch I got over night shipping and put it in at 9am and this thing is bubbling like crazy, it is dead silent and only think that you can hear is the bubbles throbbing it is a great skimmer I would recommend it for the price. I'll keep an update after I get it tuned in
Nice! I am sure you will love it. Aquamax are nice skimmers, they CRAZY over rate the capacity, but there is no harm in that. It just makes it tricky to compare to a brand like vertex that doesn't inflate ratings at all. If a vertex skimmer is rated to 2x your system volume you will have an oversized skimmer!
