To fan or not to fan

So my question is does a canapy have to have a fan? Obviously the fans remove heat from the hood, to not heat the tank water, but if tank temp is never a concern is a fan really needed?

It depends on the lighting. High heat can significantly shorten the lifespan of some.

If your canopy has no openings, I would add something to improve the air circulation for both heat removal, gas exchange and prevent any mold from developing.

Ok i have a 24"tall hood and i have 3-250w mh, the lights are about 10"off water and fans are up near the top of the hood. So even when fans run they dont blow on the lights just move air through the hood.

It will help to exhaust hot, humid air which will ultimately assist in keeping your tank temperatures lower in addition to improving to life span of your light fixture and canopy by reducing the moisture inside the hood. There are several ways to accomplish this. I used some fan systems that were designed to cool entertainment centers and audio/video equipment on mine.
