To Frag plug or not to Frag plug

Depends on if they're growing on the plug or not. If it's just a small rock glued to a plug it's the same as any coral that hasn't started to encrust onto the plug. But if they're growing on the plug I tend to just cut the plug up.

Haha good to know, maybe i'll stop by Lowes and pick some up real quick, it's usually pretty cheap. do you just dip for 5 minutes or so? and mix a few caps per gallon of water? I highly doubt there are instructions on it for dipping coral haha. and good to know. I'd rather have Zoa in the sand and i have a few isolated rocks so maybe i'll just bury a plug near the rock mounds and try to get them to grow onto it.

I do 5ml Bayer to 375ml saltwater for 15 min. Peoples opinions on dilution and time frame differ quite a bit. What I do is more on a diluted side but for a longer duration of time. Here is a good write up on using Bayer as a dip:

I leave mine on frag plug unless they fall off plug, then I will mount into rock base

If you start trying to frag zoas and palys take the necessary precautions. If you dont know what that means, do not frag them. Not trying to be rude, just want you to be safe.

I personally try to remove corals from their frag plugs before they go into my tank - even if I am putting them on a frag rack (I just transfer the coral a new, clean plug).

When I put them on rock, I glue them directly to the rock unless it is encrusted onto the plug, then I cut off them stem and glue the remaining disk directly to the rock.

This is what I try to do. A dremel with a dimond cutting disc comes in handy. If its not possible to remove a new frag from a rock or plug I either glue over as much as possible, cover in frag putty or scrub and scrap the frag plug or rock clean.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed faster growth with encrusting coral when setting the plug in putty?
If the plug is enctusenc, I remove the base of the plug, and glue the base into a bed of putty on a piece of rubble rock. It seems to encrusted faster on the putty than on to bare rock.

I can normally pop them off by hand as they are usually held down by super glue. If I can't I use "coral cutters" from Aquavitro. Fortunately for me, I got them for free from a friend; they're not expensive though.

I also use the coral cutters. I have had great luck with them. I have had a set for years they have outlasted other cutters I have used and are still in great shape.

So I do cut off the coral off the frag plug.

I'm not fragging anything yet. But yeah I've looked up how to frag zoas and it makes me nervous. Eventually ill start, but I'm mainly asking because I'm buying frags and putting them in my tank

Yeah I would!! But u thought I remembered reading that it can't be changed after it's created

I only buy sps frags. I did frags, then put in quarantine. I cut plug off frag and glue, epoxy, glue in displays. No bugs. Coral will encrust and you won’t see plug. Otherwise, I may lose the frag if I superglue to rock.
