Say for money reasons if I was to get a canister filter for my 75-gallon reef that was rated for 50 gallons or something how would that affect and would that work. I am aware that if it's not for 75 I probably shouldn't put it on a bigger tank than what it was intended for and I always like to go overkill with my filters but right now I'm on a tight budget and I don't think it would be too bad because I don't have much in there yet. So could that work or could my tank even be fine without a filter? Also, I don't have a sump or an all-in-one because I don't have room at all. Thanks for the help!

Manufacturers often rate based on flow. Key is how much media can you place in the canister. Matrix being one of the best and most affordable yet I’d double or quadruple what they recommend and go off that. Flow doesn’t matter. Contact time more important.

If you have porous rock in the tank that will help as well. Plus how large is your bio load and how much do you plan to feed. Two clowns fed every other day not
The same as same two fed three times a day.
