To Sock or not to Sock

Well it's good for trapping detritus. I use one for a day or two after cleaning then pull it. Good to use if you clean and change them often.

Been using a filter sock for years. I generally buy about 6-8 of them, and just rotate through. When I put my last one on, I throw the rest in the washing machine with a bit of bleach. Keeps my sump super clean.

Love socking and wouldn't think twice maintaining a tank without one. If you are indecisive you can chose between 100 0r 200 micron or maybe go to a mesh if you are worried about trapping too much detirus, etc.....imho.

I've been socking and changing and cleaning 1 to 2 times per week... and now not socking for the last couple days. They work great but can also be nitrate factories. I know allot of people who run without them so I figure I'd give it a go. My tank looks fine so far.

Try it. Not expensive. Easy to remove.

:nerd::angel:I Sock my display tank overflow with a mesh sock. Tried wool. More maintenance and catches more waste than I wanted it to. The overflow for my frag tank and refug are not filtered. Want the pods etc to make it to the rest of the system. Happy Reefing. God Bless.

Micron socking provides huge mechanical filtration. It polishes the water and protects pumps from getting damaged from debris. It's good to have a bunch of them on hand so you can just change them quick, and having a bunch on hand will cut down on washing machine loads. I use 100 micron 7x32" and change them every couple of days.

Socks play a huge role in my tank, but I also run a very high turnover return so I push a lot of water through them. They do have to be changed every few days.
