To sump or not to sump

I am very close to converting a 75g freshwater tank to a second / upgraded reef tank. I currently run an AIO with essentially no mechanical filtration and keep going back and forth about should I try to drill this new tank or just run similar to what I have now with May be a Fiji cube AIO kit vs a tidal HOB.

1. any ideas on what my odds of pulling off drilling without breaking the tank?

2. Is any gain worth the risks?

If it's not tempered and you do it right the risk is very minimal.

Whether it worth it only you can say. Can have a successful tank either way. For me personally I always go with a sump. Just gives me a lot more flexibility on equipment choices I may or may not need/want in the future.

Drilling a tank isn't hard at all, but some of the newer 75s have tempered sides and bottoms. I'd lean towards no if you're unsure.

Ordered an eshops overflow that comes with a drill bit. Wish me luck! Will update if I destroy a tank or succeed. The Eshops vid def makes it look straightforward and this thing comes w a plastic template and the drill bit. My tank has a rim so I’m wondering if I should drill from the inside so the hole is closer to the top?

I decided on a sump and drilled my tank. It's easy to do. So glad I went this route.

Drilling went great!!! The hole is perfect, no break through! I would def try that again. Now just have to figure out how to plumb a sump. I have one made from a 20L that I found on the curb and stashed in the garage ages ago

I think you will definitely be glad you have the sump imo. Glad it went well

if your stand can fit a pecto 40br they make great sumps. cheap to. use 1/4" plate glass from your local glass shop for the baffles and your good to go!

I would but the nice thing about the 20 is that I already have it lol. It has all the baffles and stuff in from what looks like a kit
