Have had my tank up and running for over a year. Switched from LPS to soft corals because I love the natural movement of soft corals. Have mushrooms, neon green sinularia, and lots of toadstools. Have had these three toadstools for over a year and they have all grown a lot. My Tyree neon green polyp toadstool started off the size of a pinto bean and has grown triple the size in a year. Has shed numerous times and always is open and lovely. Yesterday was admiring how pretty it was and today it is legit crumbling from the top :(
I panicked and tried to turkey baster it to see if it would shed but it’s not shiny on top like usual and small pieces blew off. I’m upset because I do routine weekly 3-5 gallon water changes (20 gallon tank, low nutrients always) and the parameters are always fine. It’s strange because it over night decided to rot? And disintegrate. Checked my parameters again:
Salinity the usual 1.025
Nitrite is undetectable
Nitrate not quite detectable
Temp ranges from 77-79
Ph 8.1
Nothing has changed at all. Don’t have algae issues, only have one clown and one goby. All the other corals look amazing.
Have marine orbit light they have always done well with.
Does anyone have any idea how a toadstool can randomly crumble and die? I’m not giving up on it it’s one of my favorite corals but it does not look good. I’m not new but not extra experienced and could use some ideas thanks! I haven’t seen any pests that could harm it. Like I said it’s been doing amazing for over a year!

Toadstools have a tendency to, every once in a great while, slough off their skin and look ticked. If your water parameters are fine, you only need to wait and watch as it returns to fluffyness.

I'd check all your water parameters just to be safe but it's not uncommon for a very healthy toadstool to close up every once in a while and open up a few days or weeks later.

In your picture it still maintains it's firmness and stands tall, I'd be pretty concerned if it went limp and start falling a part.

I’m trying not to panic but I’ve seen this guy shed sooo many times and it always gets round and shiny on top and parts never fall off. It’s dull and grey and hard to see in the pic but little pieces are falling off like dust. Hopefully it perks back up :(

That seems odd to me. I’ve had green toadstools many years and never saw any type of disintegration. I would start with daily 10% water changes. Are your nitrates normally close to zero?

Yep I don’t feed a lot and my two fish are pretty tiny. I haven’t had any dramatic tank fluctuations in a year.

Mine did that it didn't make it. Have you dosed anything right over the leather or wher flow take it i to the leather

Crumbling no, But you have it on bottom and although not typically an issue, it is likely not getting enough current which they need. With lack of flow, they get a film over their skin which holds back polyps and ability to get nutrients. Hold it in front of power head for a minute or two, and bring it up to mid tank.
They also require iron in the water and prefer moderate light intensity.
Monthly take a turkey baster and blow gentle blasts over the top of it to remove mulm and detrious and keep that film loose.

That ring on the bottom has been there I’ve tried gently brushing it off. It’s right in front of the powerhead and whips around moderately and seemed to love it there! I have my flow pretty high because the toadies seem to like it! I figured with my water changes they are getting what they need and never had any issues until now :/
I always turkey baster all my corals during my weekly water changes

the ring may be from light shading ( the area where light does not reach it).

I’m researching this heavily right now as well. Mine is doing the same thing around the cap. Polyps our fully out, standing nice and strong. But the edges are literally crumbling away with white spots and divots like it’s deteriorating in a way... Doesn’t smell and if firm to the touch. I hope mine pulls through like yours did!

I'm sure it will, mine was exactly the same and ended up a lot bigger after it was done :)

Hey! I’ve been having this same issues with several of my leathers. He usually sheds just fine but he isn’t looking hot. I have been dosing bacteria (as I’m having issues with growing Coraline) and lower my p04 and n03. N03 is at 40 and p04 is sky high. However this has always been my issues and I’m 8 months into my tank.
my leathers have always been good until I started dosing. I have since reduced it drastically to just twice a week opposed to every day. No change yet. One leather has his shape and is standing. the other still has shape but is laying Down. I am very strict about maintenance and all my other levels are spot on.
