I have a toadstool leather that im unsure whether its dying or not and i was wondering if i should frag it to save it or not. The top of it has turned a greyish color in spots and has a whitish/yellow spot here and there on it. Also i took a turkey baster to it to blow off some of the detrius around the foot area and now it seems like the foot part is falling apart i gently pushed water its way and it blew away chunks. Its under 250w 20k mh lighting Nitrite 0 Ammonia 0 Phos. 0 PH 8.2 SG 1.025 Cal 450 Nitrate 5ppm Temp 79.7. The lights are off atm but first thing in the am when they come on i will take a pic. I really dont want to loose this coral it was a very nice piece

how long have u had it? Have u done something differently lately? Sometimes they're just shedding...

Ive had it about 4mths now and nothing unusual everything is the same as day one it don't look like it does when it sheds its alot different

Do you have any pics? Are you sure it's not just shedding?

Is this a yellow fiji? I've found them hit or miss. If it smells, looks rotten or is falling apart (chunks)...remove it. Most leathers are just droopy and will slime a bit until they get used to your tank...but fiji's go south quick. Post up a pic.

bout to post pics its a kinda dark pic with the main lights on it wont pick it up good on my camera

The first pic shows some of the spots i was talking about. The second is a pic of the foot decaying away when the big halildes come on i will try to get another pic of it. Some days the polyps come out fine then at other times it seems to be falling apart

if i keep it any lower everything looks rough the place i got all my coral from run it at 79-80. Earlier while taking the mag float across the tank it fell from where it was attached to so i pulled it up to inspect it for pest etc and didnt see any all the polyps are extended now that its on the sand bed it don't have a rotten smell it has a oceany smell the best way i can describe it lol like when you got to the beach and it has that smell

well you are the best one to make the call on it

but as harmless as they seem when they die they can take alot of victims along with them they are very toxic on the inside...so if you have alot of corals remember that sometimes saving one can coat you many. But like i said that is your call ...it's you that is the troubleshooter.....

PS if you do frag it do it in a seperate container of tank water and toss the water out when you are done :)

Personally I would lugols dip here without any other indication of problems. Would help identify pests too if any are on the coral.

If the tissue is degrading I agree you need to take action, leathers are nasty when they melt.

ok ill keep an eye on it if it starts going south its getting pulled atm it don't look too bad looks like its bouncing back
