Hello all,

Not sure if this is an emergency but my toadstool won’t open! I’ve had it for months and had no problems.
For about a week it hasn’t opened. All my other corals are fine, any ideas?

Attached is a picture of it when it was open and now it’s just closed up.

Thanks for the help.

Toadstools will develop a waxy coating on the surface, this enables the coral to shed any detritus or algae build up. During this period the coral often remains closed until the waxy coating is shed.

Double check your water chemistry though.

Increasing flow may assist the coral in shedding the coating quicker.

It does appear to be kinda shiny, how long does this waxy period last?

Yeah they do this. Usually when you have a bit of an algae issue (diatom or dino can do it). They shed their outter layer to rid themselves of any build up.

They can be waxy for a week or so. Then will shed.

Turkey baster to help them remove shed and if have sensitive corals may want to suck up the shed to avoid irritation.

Some tanks have enough flow to help them but i find turkey basting the most effective.

Nothing to worry about though.

Thanks everyone, I’ll give the turkey Baster a try.
I don’t have much for algea I can see but I’ll assume it’s there.

Mine used to do this often when my tank was still young, ever week or 2 it'd close up and shed this would take a day or two.

Last time it did this it was a couple of months ago, and I ended up helping it a little bit by turkey blasting it.

Don't panic yet or at all. leathers are weird. Leathers like med to strong flow and med lighting. Sometimes they won't open for days, then they pop open and yell "Hey, did ya miss me???

thanks for the postings...my toadstool leather decided to close yesterday...show a little shiny on the surface...and yes some diatoms have appeared that may have irritated it...

Does the shedding also come with them losing some color? Mine seem to have gone from green to a bit grey-ish even though a couple of days ago it was blooming.

Mine do this all the time. It won’t open it’s tentacles for a week or so at a time then magically open and be twice its original size
