Hello, I just received my fish order from live aquaria, within this order was a Tomini tang that my wife really wanted. I introduced the tomini and a half black mimic to my tank yesterday. Before we go any further lets not talk about QT... My tank due to some unsavory practices by my LFS brought ICK into my tank, therefore I am treating with ICK attack and it is working for the other fish in the tank. Now back to the fish I'm not really sure what the heck is going on because he was fantastic yesterday swimming and eating, and the half black was doing the same yesterday. Just checked my levels and the only thing that is out of sorts is phosphates. I fear there is something troubling with my tank due to the fact that if this tang dies that would make it the 4th tang that has died in my tank. I have not lost any other fish just tangs.

2 Clowns
1 sleeper head goby
1 Watchmen goby
1 six line wrasse
1 sailfin blenny
1 midas blenny
1 Half black mimic tang
1 Tomini tang

Any ideas on what could be causing the tangs to die as soon as they touch my water?

Are you testing for copper and do you know what copper level tank is at ?
Also, how and how long did you acclimate the fish?

I did drip acclimation for about an hour... wouldn’t my inverts be dying if copper was present?

SOME HOLD UP AGAINST COPPER BUT FOR MOST PART , they do die. Ich attack is very low in copper content
As for acclimation which was a suspect, that is a partial acclimation persay.
Make it a practice to do the following as there are factors with your acclimation that may have affected tomini:

Never acclimate in the store bag as while you are dripping, ammonia has ability to form in bag with an already stressed fish from being caught
Float bag for 15-20 mins. Empty bag and contents in a clean pail or bucket and add a cup of tank water every 15 minutes 8X (2 hrs).
After the final addition of tank water, measure salinity in the tank and in the acclimation bucket and make sure they are the same or close to.
Rather than net which causes stress, use that same cup to corner and trap fish and carry to tank and release it from cup.
Ick attack can be less effective than copper or other chemical based meds, although herbal as it contains naphthoquinones, which has not been fully broken down for effectiveness.
Provide plenty of oxygen in QT also

Gonna take me a bit to get them up.
Take a look at the sticky section at the top of this section, it describes information that is helpful to know about your tank...pics, video, water quality, tank history, etc.

Hiya just seen this thread and had to reply as the same happend to me

I learnt that the cause was another fish fighting for control of the tank and the stress killed it

do you have a aggressive fish that’s been in there for a while?

A wrong phosphate reading wouldnt be causing this IMHO

dont always assume deaths are caused by bad levels

I dont think so... then again I'm not sure which other fish would have been bullying him? I introduced both tangs at the same time and it seems like everyone "was" getting along quite nicely.

This is beyond frustrating and truth be told I think I'm done buying fish until I get the new tank. then I'll be starting over with the cycle and treating the fish for whatever they have now and having a proper QT.

Thanks all.
