The ones from Lowes will be fine, but they should be plugged into a GFCI if possible. They also sell power strips with GFCI's built in, but they're a bit pricey.
Power strips from HD would be just fine….however using something like a Reefkeeper makes things a bit easier. Automates your system.
I originally had a wad of spaghetti wiring along the side of the tank. What I did was put up a scrap piece of plywood to get a handle on my wiring. I’ve been moving things around before building a cabinet to hold all the wiring. This gives me a chance to find out what works as far as location. I have two Reefkeepers.
Don't buy the really cheap power strips. Get the heavier duty ones meant to handle some load. Another good option is the American DJ power strips with individual switches on each outlet.
If you are close to a Guitar Center they sell an 8 outlet power strip with individual out switches for around $25. The individual swithched outlets make it nice for feeding and maintenace. This is what I did before I bought my Apex controller and still use it today for running pumps and lights where I mix my saltwater. I havealso seen these in a more consumer grade that looks more like a traditional 6 outlet power stripon the internet for around $10
As others have said, yes you can. But don't buy something really cheap that will click off or quite working on you while you are away! I would actually buy them with a surge protector if I were plugging up expensive equipment.
