Hey y'all,
Recently my SPS have been loosing their tips and I think it may be my carbon that made my water too clear. I used to use ROX 0.8 carbon from BRS and I just switched to Reef-spec carbon from Red Sea. Right after I added the carbon I started loosing Monties, birds nest and Stylos. Once I noticed that all of the tips were dying and all the corals were dying I took out the carbon and switched it out for the 0.8 ROX carbon that I used to use before. I also added a Chemi-Pure. Is it the light that is now too strong because the water is clear? How can I help out my SPS?

Parameters:
ALK - 8.3-8.4
CA - 430-435
MAG 1340-1350
TEMP - 77-78
SG - 1.026
NITRATE - 2-5
PHOS - undetectable

I vigorously skim and change my socks periodically.

Too clear in the sense that light can punch through more intensely? That'd be my initial thought. Consistent water changes?

Burnt tips are usually from Kh or K swings. If the water was clearer, ROX 8 will keep your water pretty clear, then I would think your whole SPS would be bleaching. JMT

My ALK hasn't moved more than .4 DKH in months and this situation started right when I added the carbon.

I did some test on AC with my SPS tank years back.
It could be the amount of AC in your reactor that caused this and IMO AC is releasing something in the water that just made it even worse.
I can't back this statement up as I didn't run a scientific test on that.
Just every time I run AC in any form I saw trouble.
I had the best results on SPS without running AC.
For clarity I run for the last 1+ year MicroNano bubbles.
It's free and water gets as clear as with AC but it won't harm the SPS.

What is this micronano bubbles you speak of?

I can't identify what's causing it but I would suggest lowering Alk down to around 7 because for whatever reason SPS seem to be more resilient at more natural levels. Tip burn risk increases greatly over 8KH in my experience and stripping the water too fast combined with 8+ KH might have been enough.

Just a guess though.

Oi this looks pretty sweet.

It does right :)
Wait till you are in the Micronano bubbling and see the results on your system ;)

Great Thread my friend!
