is there such a thing as too much flow in your tank......

i have a 125 gallon tank...have one 1400 koralia pump on the right side of the tank
a 1100 koralia on the left side, which is really not working well so taking it out and replacing with another 1400 on the left side and putting 2 850 in the center of the tank off set to each side....
any suggestions

yes i had 2 koralia magnum 6 2250gph in my 120 and it was way to much flow now i just have 1 mp40wes on the right side running at 1 notch over the half way point and i will probably be getting a mp10wes for the left, With what you are saying you will have 4500 gph running in your tank that's 36x the flow of your tank its recommended to have 10x the flow

No u just have to know how to place ur flow....

I have in my 90 gallon tank
3 jeabo wp40s
1 mp40. I have another but haven't put it on yet, I need to redo my electrical control
And a mag 18 for my return. All my corals love the super high flow.

Are you concerned with skimmer dwell time with mag 18 on a 90?

Sounds like you don't have too much flow to me, but one thing I would suggest is instead of many unsightly small powerheads, get a few big ones that can handle the tank. Just personal preference but I like as little gadgets in my display as possible

You don't have enough if u are wanting sps. I have a pair of wp40s, a closed loop at 3000gph and +- 1000gph from my sump on my 180

I think it what you want to keep in your tank because some corals don't need too much flow and some do. also how you place it. In my tank i'm running 2 MP60 in a 120g just for sps.

That is not very much flow for a 125, it's sufficient for zoas and soft corals but sps and some lps you would want more flow. I have two mp40s turned all the way up and over 1000 gph from my return in my 150 and I have another mp10 on the way and possibly adding another one.

so the 1500 koralia on the right, put another on the left side of the tank...facing front on one side and face to the back of the tank on the right...
should i put two smaller powerheads on either side in the center???was thinking 850..myself i just dont want to slam the corals around..i know alot of corals love the flow, but dont want to slam them..any suggestions

Like others have stated it depends on the corals you are trying to keep. Whats nice about the ecotechs is you can dial them back or ramp them up. They will also give you more coverage throughout tank.

Problem with ecotechs=direct flow. The koralias, jebs, and tunzes give you the ability to aim the flow thus creating a more random flow. I don't care about the power or size of the powerhead in my tank. I like knowing I have versatility in the direction of my water flow.

My 65 gallon has two 1050s on the left and one 1400 on the right alternating thanks to the smart wave. They alternate every 30 seconds. My LPS couldn't be happier. I also have a mag 7 return. The system also have a 30 frag tank tied in with a mag 3 return and koralia 850 in it.

Have you ever seen a vortech working in person? You don't need to aim them, they make flow everywhere. When I say everywhere, I mean everywhere.

Yes, in a LPS dominated tank and an SPS dominated tanks. They move water no doubt but I don't think it is as turbulent as the other three companies can do. Yeah you get the water to slush back and forth for what? So you can say its just like the ocean! My tank makes a wave giggle giggle.

My buddy HAD two mp40s in his tank and it was doing ok. He got rid of one mp40 for a wp25. What a difference it made, corals opened up more they swept around more. He wants to get rid of the other mp40 for a wp25.

When he did run two mp40s one was on pulse at 30% and the other on reef crest at 60%. The flow was ok like I said but I kept telling him it was too blah. Bring in the wp25 and two weeks later the tank looks total different color wise and how wide open the coral are now. Flow is extremely random.

IMO yes you can have too much flow at a constant but in random modes when it can be controlled you can put a lot more. I wanna say general rule of thumb is 10-20x water volume but can't remember. I have 2 mp 40's on reef crest about 50% and everything's happy (mainly sps, zoas, and chalices). I turned up and a lot of stuff shrunk and sps didn't have as much polyp extension.

This is awesome!! I just ordered 2 WP40s for my 120 and thought it might be too much flow but it should be fine!

the lingo im not following wp25?? so having a 1400 koralia on each side should be fine....or too much and if i get the hydor smartwave that would be good

I would honestly have three 1400 on a smart wave in the 125. Depending on coral movement and dead spots you may need a koralia or two on constantly aimed at potential dead spots.

WP is made by jebao. They nearly mocked every part of the tunze and a fraction of the price. I doubted their ability until I saw them in person. Very nicely done however being sued last I saw for mocking tunze's design.

Reading the first paragraph I am completely floored as you are the first to say that I've read the mp 40 is not as powerful as the other 3 mentioned.

I have seen them side by side and yes way more powerful the the other 3 and there was a recent study proving. And yes the random modes creating the back and forth turbulence to simulate the ocean is what we want in our tanks. As natural as possible.

In response to your friends tank....
Most corals will recede, shrink, less polyp extension, close up, etc...when there's too much flow or parameters aren't right. So my guess is when they took the mp 40's off and put the wp's on the corals were much more relaxed and happy because they had less turbulence.

I am not trying to argue or mess up this thread but I have seen the 2 side by side and the wp doesn't hold a candle to the vortech when it comes to performance. There's a reason their $100 and the vortech is $465. Just my 2 cents.
