Hi all,

Would like to ask, is there such things as too much macroalgae in a display tank?
As I'm trying to a macroalgae tank, I'm wondering if too much of macroalgae will bring harm to a tank?
Does weekly dose of fertilizer will help the macroalgae from out compete each other for nutrient?

Thanks

Some would say, any is too much, others would say you cant have enough. Whatever is pleasing to your eye.

yes it can help

Macro algae tanks are extremely hard to keep. You will need to dose trace and nutrients

No such thing as too much macroalgae, as long as you keep nitrates and, less important IME, phosphates at good levels. I use Spectracide stump remover for nitrate and Seachem Phosphorous for phosphate. My macroalgae tank, which is completely filled with macros and just 2 seahorses, thrives with only nitrate dosing every 2 weeks or so.

I do large weekly water changes for my seahorses. Not sure how these affect the algae in terms of trace elements.

why are they hard to keep what's difference from a refugium? if you stick with easy macros, except for maybe lighting which needs to looks good

the only thing i can thnk of is there is so much macros that it pulls nitrates and phosphates to 0. I'm having trouble keeping nitrates up in my 10gal right now because i have some red gracilaria i believe

Does red macroalgae require iron supplementation? I know red freshwater plants need it, but never did any reds in salt.

Trace elements would be beneficial to add to the macro display and so would our new product line:

Thumbs down for replying with an unsolicited advertisement.

Just having a little fun. Check the link :) iron and iodide are helpful for red macro algae but not required. Depending on what salt you use and how often you are doing water changes you likely wouldn't need to add any.

No harm done, just seemed a little 'spammy' on my first viewing.

But you guys have good stuff and I do intend to check it out. Have some Ulva arriving tomorrow from you actually.

Thanks for the kind words and let us know if you need anything after your order arrives!

Never met anyone who's idea of fun was getting ads.

OP: I don't see how you can have too many macro algae. If you search you will find tanks jammed with them. I've never really understood why people "have trouble" keeping nitrates and phosphates above 0. Just dump more food. I promise if you add a a whole shrimp or two you won't be complaining about low nitrates.

It was an April fools day prank to a fake product line. But definitely could have included included the better details in the first response like we did in the second.
