I have a 3" hippo in my 180 gallon and I feed a lot of seafood because I also have butterflies. The tang has eaten every bit of green hair and other algae in the tank. I have nori to supplement which it eats, but wondering if its bad for the tang to eat so much meat every day versus algae?

I keep tangs, some have been with me 7-8 years. I feed nori but probably not as often as I should. It definatly isn't a staple in their diet. I used to make my own seafood mix but lately have been feeding a mix of PE mysis rods and some blister packs of frozen. I feed some high quality pellets mixed in and as treats because they are better at begging than my dogs. All of mine are fat and healthy and I've never seen a sign of hlle on my purple yellows or hippo.

it's just amazing. You have your own personal post with more information about your aquarium and,,gang"?

The diet for my tangs is heavy on mysis and brine shrimp, but get nori once to twice a week.

Ever have a tang that go after zoas? Had a small hippo that did, didn't eat nori, went after all the meaty foods. This was in my previous tank before moving. It turned my tank almost into a fowlr..I will say that is the most craziest thing I have seen in 10 years of this hobby.

I've had two different hippo tangs suddenly decide zoanthids were part of their diet. Had them in the tank for several years with zoanthids, but one day it all changed.

Thank you. Click the tank thread next to my name. Warning there are some lame attempts at humor and old guy ramblings in the thread but I hope some interesting info as well.

No - despite being termed "herbivores," tangs are actually omnivores that are more carnivorous than herbivorous; they just eat more algae than the average fish. The feed used to breed blue tangs successfully was LRS Fertility Frenzy, which is a meaty feed. Having some algae available is definitely good for the fish though.
