Hi,

I was wondering if I have too much sand in my tank. It's a combination of live sand and white fine coarse (for looks). This will be a fish-only tank. I keep reading different things on the internet, so I figured I better ask. Depth is somewhere between 2 and 2.7 max. The last time I had my tank set up I had significantly less sand, so I don't know if this is still ok.

You can add as much sand as you like! I think your tank looks great!

Thank you very much for the kind welcome!

I was mostly wondering about the amount because the last time I hardly had sand over the black edge and already problems with gas-buildup/fouling. I won't have sand stirrers because the trigger I'm getting would like to invite them for dinner.

But since I'm at asking questions. Should I try to get some live-rock to help converting the other rocks? The last two times I had the tank set up (one with and one without fish/macroorganisms), the rocks turned purple/brownish one time and just a green algae- buildup the other - and I don't want to promote any unhealty algae growth. Since I have a hard time distinguishing the differnt algae types I went with "the less of anything, the better)

(Maybe a mod can change my title to add "and other newbie questions"?)

That amount of sand is perfect! But, some species of fish of invertebrates require a lot of sand! So make sure you are getting the right fish! :D

Purple/brown algae is coralline algae and most people welcome it (myself included), yeah I'd recommend it, its really helpful with your cycle and will quadruple your microfauna diversity. Your tank looks great and I love the setup, but maybe move that stacked piece of rock, if you've never done this before than you should know that between snails, hermits, and fish, they will knock down anything they can

Thank you. I will see if I can find any live-rock. It's really hard where I live, unfortunately. Point taken: brown algae is good (but green is not and last time I had it set up waiting for fish, I had only green algae :-/ )

No snails and hermits :) But I do have a hunch that the trigger will re-decorate at some point ;o

I added a few more rocks/decor and will add one or two more lava rocks.

While I'm at it: heater to the left is fine or should it be close to the filter?

No online vendor (that I'm aware of, at least) ships to Hawaii, unfortunately. We have very stringent laws. I do know that the LFS on the other island does have live rock from time to time, but I do not know whether I'm actually allowed to ship those inter-island. Living in Hawaii, you're very close to the source and still face some of the most stringent laws....

Petco has some in their tanks, but first I don't know if they're for sale and second...well...I don't really trust that they're healthy and I'm not introducing something nasty into my tank

I would just go with dry since you have so many rules to contend with. It will become live with time, you just have to give it a bit more time than if you could have seeded with live.
