Too much wattage?

Depends on the light/intensity/settings.

Agree with this. Most modern led can run at minimal intensity. Other factor is a 300w led will likely be running at nowhere near 300w even if set at 100%. Often at all channels 100% it may be half or less than that output.

Sometimes an advertised 300w led light isn't even 300w rated. One on Amazon claims to be a 300w led reef light. It uses 338 half watt LEDs. Does not take a math major to figure out that's not 300w even if they do run at 100%. In reality I bet that light for example may be running at 50-100w at max.

Guess I am saying if you want an answer of any value then need to list the lights or all anyone can do is guess

Running LEDs at a lower wattage will extend longevity and produce less heat. Can always go down but up has a limit and that 55 might one day become a 120 and then a 300 and you know how this goes...
