Too small for a clam?

I'm a year into this hobby and my tank is stable, corals are fine, I'm thinking about getting a clam. I have a 75g and I know they can get pretty big and will out grow my tank quickly. Is there a clam that stays on the small side that would be okay for my tank size?

That is more than enough room for one. I have a squamosa in my 20gal. IMO the tridacna maxima is a little slower grower than say the squamosa or derasa clams.

Clams will suck up your calcium like no other so keep an eye on that.

My Ca is higher than I like right now at 500 I usually keep it at 420-450. I test my parameters twice a week.

I just took a quick ride to the lfs that's near my work to see what they had. They have three Maximas about 4 inches across and are asking $80. Thanks, I will give Pacific East Aquaculture a look, I like the ones at the lfs I just looked at, but I would really like to find one with some awesome colors and patterns.

That's not a bad price. PEA will probably be a little more. You could wait a few weeks as they usually have some pretty good deals on them during the week of Black Friday.

Croceas are the smallest of clams and only get a max of 6". Beautiful and my favorites. However, croceas are very light heavy. They need a lot and the right kind. Derasas get big fast, but will slow after about 8-10". They are probably the most hardy of all clams I have kept. Squamies are also great, but grow fast and large.

Note for you, they do like tank stirred up sometimes (blowing out rock and sand). Also, you will need to supplement ca and alk and mg, etc. These guys need lots and remove it fast.
