Howdy all!

I've decided to post a topic of the week each week on Wednesdays. (I'm a day late...SORRY) Something to get some discussions going.
Please answer as detailed as you'd like and pictures are encouraged!!

This week, Thurs 1/30/14 - Best OOPS Moment
  1. What have you done to your tank or related to your tank that has been an "OOPS" Moment? :doh:

I have now flooded my upstairs bathroom 3 time from my RODI overflowing my container! Yep the wife loves this hobby...
 
Yeah, I'd have to say just about all of our "oops" moments involve overflowing RO/DI. LOL.

We fill a 40g Brute Can with RO/DI since we have so many tanks. We will tell the other person when we turn the water on so that one of us remembers to shut it off.

This past Saturday I turned the RO/DI on. I asked Capt if he turned it off when we were going to bed. He must have misheard me because he answered yes.
Sunday some water changes and things were done.
Monday morning I woke up and the can was overflowing. Worst of all we have carpet in that room. EEK!

We were both bamboozled as to when the water was turned on. We both denied turning it on on Sunday, so it had to have been on from Saturday until Monday morning.
We didn't notice that it was running on Sunday because we used so much of it.

Nothing better than waking up and having to WetVac the carpet. :faint2:

When I was a super noob and with my first ever sump my wife called freaking out. There was water shooting everywhere so calmly just open the doors and flip the powerstrip to the off postition she agreed. Yep you guessed it . She got shocked , wet ,and mad all in the same moment.......turns out the main pump hose needs a hose clamp """"""whoops"""""":fish:
So now to the present """all my hoses yeah they are clamped""""when I ran the electrical I installed and emergency shut off switch """ she doesn't even need to enter my fish room ........hahaha
 
Lets see, I've flooded the basement twice...once by letting my RO/DI run over night and the next was after filling up my top off bucket, I didnt let the house that I siphoned the water drain all the way so I left it still in the barrel and the hose i just rested on top of the barrel...well needless to say the house fell off the barrel onto the ground and started its own siphon....58 gallons of RO water covered the basement....

I had two fish jump...and not just any old fish...my purple tang and my Davinci Clownfish (when they first came out)...I now have a screen on the tank....(which I don't think is currently on ATM...doh!

If using acrylic baffles for a glass tank sump, make sure you leave enough room for the acylic to expand after its cut...had my 40 gallon breeder sump blow out on me 4 months after being set up...cracks originated from where the baffles were placed...

I shorted out the dimmer switch for my LEDs during a water change. It caused the whites to ramp up to 100%. Luckily I caught it before it fried my corals.
 
I just cut my arm on the corner of a falling glass lid....
I've overflowed my RO jugs more times than I could possibly care to count...
First time I "turned on" a tank with a sump, and then turned the return pump off, I got a backsiphon that flooded three rooms with saltwater before I figured out what exactly was happening. >.< With my mom and I both having fibromyalgia (and already exhausted from setting the thing up) that was fun to clean up...
Then when that tank turned out to be no good, I used the water from it to change my 20g for about a week without testing it first, and caused the only greenwater bloom I've ever had (and it was horrible.) Turns out, the water was loooaded with with phosphate and nitrate. No wonder the guy's fish and corals died...
My pair of anthias jumped out of their acclimation bucket and scared the life outta me - elation to panic in about half a second....
I broke a heater by leaving it plugged in out of water, then being stupid and putting it back in the water to cool it off...
I used rid-ich in a tank with shrooms and xenia. Destroyed them both...
Let's see... what else...

I used to overflow my rodi bucket regularly until I finally installed a float switch, bust $15 I ever spent! I already shared my tank overflowing into the living room story as well as dropping and breaking my skimmer into pieces. Probably my biggest oops came from using my uncalibrated refractometer and thinking my salinity was 1.035 and promptly siphoning out 10 gallons of water and replacing with fresh water only then to think about the refractometer and retest finding I had then dropped my salinity to 1.018 and promptly adding 10 gallons of fresh salt water. All this in about 45 minutes. Needless to say I had some losses and learned a lesson about making gradual corrections ( if they even need to be made!)
 
I bred and raised Peppermint Shrimp, had three of them make it to over 3/4" size. Decided to put a couple rocks in the grow out tank with them that had aiptasia on them. Didn't see the at least 10 year old Brittle Star in the rock. Well, I'm down to just one baby now.

Let's just say that I do not recommend draining out some of the water out of your fish bag with the fish still in it over the toilet. Big oops!

I poured a Flame Angel into the dishwater in the sink once. I drove over a hundred miles one way to pick it up. OMG, it was only in the soapy water for about one second. It probably got a little trauma from me scooping it out, too. I know I went through a little trauma. That was I'd say four years ago and I still have it. Maybe dawn dishwashing soap is a good dip after all?
 
I gave one of my sons platy's a fun ride in a siphon hose when I was changing his water one time. He survived but he did look a bit confused for a day or two . Oh, and I have come close to the toilet water draining thing a couple times...now I use a bucket.

A few of my fish have taken a siphon trip.
 
Were do I start I have a few. I was cleaning my loc line one day tried to pull it off which is a pain. After some effort it came off pretty hard and smashed my pink tip torch. It ended up killing a head. Its a $50 a head torch. Im also good at gluing zoas shut. I use a ball valve to slow ny drain down a bit so it makes the water level a little higher which makes it dead silent. It has to be watched for awhile to make sure its not gettung higher. One day I made a slight change and went to work. Which I never do but that day I did. I get a phone call a few hours Phill your tank is over flowing what do I do. I now have a back up drain that stays wide open that sits alittle higher so it will never over flow again hopefully
