You don't understand because you probably haven't had an edge. The whole problem is that little 8"x6" opening in the top located in the back of the tank. You can't get into the tank to do anything. A snail knocking a frag over can be an event in itself trying to get the frag back in place. Lighting is inside the hood I built out of acrylic/plexi-glass from the hardware store and reinforced with a couple scrap pieces of aluminum I had laying around. I used no special tools just to show that anyone can do it. I will also fill in the swams with body filler for a cleaner lok but right now I'm just working out hiding the wires and putting some kind os stop on it so there is no chance of it falling into the tank. The lighting is a DIY LEDs from Ledgroupbuy. 4-3ups with 2:1 RB:NW, 4 TrueViolets, 2 Turquoise, 1 Deep Red and 3 RB for moonlight/extra actinic. The hood also conceals 2 80mm fans as well.

I understand you perfectly, as I have the first Fluval Edge that came out. And agree that scaping was a pain! But the appeal of the fluval edge was the top part, where the water level would go slightly higher due to the small raise on the top glass, making the tank look like a giant cube of clear water, no surface to look at. So when you take the top off, you take off that appeal and basically get a tank, in this case a 12g tall.
I'm not bashing, and apologize if it sounds that way. But I don't understand why you decided to purchase a fluval edge vs just buying a 12g tall since they are essentially the same at this point except the edge costs a lot more.

The biggest issue I had was the gas exchange which actually killed my two clowns I had raised for over six years. It would be a good tank if you knew what uou wanted to put in it and not ever add or change anything. And the other part is I can always put the top back on if i wanted to. I downsized so it wouldn't be as much for my wife to deal with if I needed to go out of town for a few months at a time. The top was appealing not only for looks but less salt creep evaporation and those things. But with no gas exchange, which screwed with the Ph as well, and temperature issues if filled all the way to the "rim" it just wasn't working for me. I'd already built this hood and LEDs for this one so I went with what I had. I was going to trade one of my Hanging LEDs for an 18x18x12 AIO but I just didn't get a good feal about the tank or i would have went that route.
