I wanted the same and mounted mine inside my RSM C130 hood BUT they are pretty close to the water so you get a little bit of a spotlight effect. I needed 2 primes on my smaller tank to get rid of most of that look. I'm willing to bet you're going to love those Hydras

I’ve read they should be 12”-20” above the water. 20 seems high. Trying to figure out which I prefer, gooseneck or hanging.

I think 20 is a little high as Well, id start with the 12 and go from there. Hanging would give you the option to adjust the height to what ever you want.
