Should my fresh water that I'm topping the tank off with be the same temperature as my tank water?

It's fine to be higher or lower, unless you're topping off with a LOT of water in a small tank, in that case, it's not called topping off, it's neglect.

Mine sits in an old salt bucket next to my tank, ambient temp in the house is the same as the tank anyway so I don't heat it. You're putting such a small volume of water (ounces vs GALLONS) that it won't do anything to the temperature of the larger volume, even if there was a 20 degree difference.

Do you use an auto top off system?
