Hi all,

My torch coral for the last week or two hasn’t been fully extending and the last couple of days has been almost fully retracted throughout the light cycle.

Today I noticed this dark brown stringy stuff coming out of the center of it. I’m freaking out since I think it may be brown jelly but not sure since I’ve never had that issue.

Can you pls take a look and tell from experience if this looks like a brown jelly issue? If it does, what I should do? I have been suspecting its been getting too much light but Im not sure if that has anything to do with brown jelly, as opposed to bleaching.

Please give me your thought on what you think it is and recommendations...thanks!

Looks more like poo to me. Can you take it out and smell it? If it has a rank smell that is BJD.

Couple more questions.

How long have you had it?
What is your flow and lighting like?
Have you recently dipped the Torch? If not you many want to check for Polyclad flatworms.

Looks like poop. Bjd it will look like melting I will see the skeleton and it will die real fast I lost a head a day. Till I only had one head left. And the one head is looking and doing fine now.

Really hoping its “coral poop”. Will take it out tonight and smell it as you said. Is if normal for torched to ooze out “poop” like this?

I’ve had it for about three months, no issues until now.
Not sure how to describe flow but its in about a med-high flow area.
Lighting where it is about 160 PAR-ish.
Have not dipped coral....got me concerned about those worms...will have to research that.

What are you water parameters and is it happening to other torches?

Nitrates 1.5ppm
Phos 0.03ppm
Alk 8.12 dkh
Sal 1.026 sg
Temp 77.1
pH 8.3

No other torches, but other euphyllias are just fine. Full tank shot of tank (about a month ago) for referencd below.

looks normal to me. mine does that all the time. its expelling zoenthele due to changing light intensity or changing water parameters. if it comes back in a day or two and fully extends then should be ok.

Awesome, thanks so much for the reassurance...hoping thats the case.

i noticed that some of my torch expell brown poop ocasionally expecially 2 hours before lights off when the light turn blue. to me its a good sign because it indicates to me they are starting to split.

Parameter wise everything looks good. Inspect the underside of the coral after lights out for Polyclads. The torch most likely is expelling waste. Very well possibly the torch is splitting as madlos123 mentioned.
