Torch id/ what am i doing wrong?

I might have to keep it for a while then... it could be whats going on.
I have never heard of a wall torch. I would argue that’s a made up name for a torch that’s pinching into form multiple heads at once. My grail is doing a similar thing

One head but forming 6-7. In the mean time it’s wall shaped. Give it 6 months and it will be back to individual heads

I intentionally shot this when it was retracted because I was wondering if it was a "wall" torch. It was sold to me almost 2 years ago as a cotton candy torch. None of the Polyps will separate they are all trenched together. Am I doing something wrong? Light to high? To much flow?

Can be several things- Lack of water flow, low calcium (below 400), too much light intensity, lack of feeding, high phosphates and use of tap water as examples

I have metal halides and t5s and leds so high light could be it...I was fighting high phosphate for a while when it first went in my tank.

Two things to revisit here

i have knicks, cotton candy and the grail all added the same month a year ago

Knicks 1 head became 4 individual heads

Grail is adjacent to knicks. One blank frag plug of space between them. Both in front of mp10. Identical conditions. Both 150ish par. Both fed multiple time a week
Grail became very large but hasn’t formed individual heads. It’s pinching and forming 6-7

Cotton candy opposite side of tank. Added 6 months after grail and knicks. 2 head when added, 5 head now

just the way they choose to grow. It’s not the common growth pattern but for me at least I don’t think anything is wrong.

First one is a torch pinching in several spots which is how all torches split. It’s just that the main polyp is large and pinching in multiple places, maybe this makes the process slower

Second one I bet is multiple head colony. If they claim it’s a wall torch then they need a retracted photo to prove it

Maybe contact WWC to clear it up.

Vendors are people also, and sometimes they make mistakes, or the wholesaler misnamed and the vendor passes on the mistake, and some vendors will sometimes create their own names to make something sound better than it is.

In less than one minute of looking I found another mis-label on wwc website calling a <former> lobophyllia an elegance coral

While vendors are accurate the majority of the time, it doesn’t mean the title is always correct /true.

Likely where it originated from but in time growth will adjust to its surroundings. “Tiger” torches are likely the easiest example to compare growth versus other Euphyllia because they typically grow in much tighter, and bigger, head formations due to the regions where they grow versus typical indo torches when comparing them in fresh import shipments.

It has to do with flow, light and nutrients....oh and tank depth hahah

I've noticed a lot of those styles grow in my lagoon where the tank is shorter so they can't grow as tall so they spread out like walls.
Agree. But, would you agree this doesn’t make them “wall torches”. They are branching torches, growing a little differently due to parameters/conditions, and eventually, they will branch.

Wall hammers will always grow as walls regardless of conditions. There are no wall torches.

Yes this would be my thoughts as well.

Ill keep growing it and report back in a few months I wasn't trying to say it was super rare unicorn mist that's why I also asked what I was doing wrong
Nope not doing anything wrong at all!

Its just growing to accommodate your tank.

I agree. Not doing anything wrong. My grail is doing the same thing. It’s just adapting to your tank and it will branch in time. Right now it’s one massive head, which is pretty cool. And if all the pinch spots grow at the same rate, eventually it will be 7 heads

That’s a 4 head knicks to the left and the single head banana is noticeably larger. I like it, it will be a nice colony someday
