Torch question

Is it normal for torch corals to have a longer base than "tentacles"? My other torches have longer polyps and very little of their base that shows above the skeleton...which is better...or is it just because they are they different varieties?

Hahaha man good question and something I've been wondering about myself. Do the different variants grow longer stalks and what are the differences to take in to consideration when having a torch garden?

The Aussie green tip torch In my tank has a very low squat base. It doesn’t grow tall at all and the flesh covers the entire skeleton. More like a bush than a tree.

Lights are starting to go down now, but the torch right next to the one above has hardly any base at all showing above the skeleton...

While not super immediate emergency, they do show signs of something they dont really like going on.

The 1st video looks like a lot of my torches when I frag them and move them to a new tank.

The 2md video looks like that torch has better extension but the flesh band is very small and needs some tlc.

Flow and PAR can play a big part in why tenticles stay short. Too much and they won't come out...

There are variations with shorter tenticles and also cristata corals that get confused as torches often.

Tiger torches are one variation that don't get super long tenticles....a lot of these came from Malaysia which also tend to have shorter tenticles.

Aussie is another variation that I've notice tend to keep shorter tenticles.

I do not feel like I have an excess of flow, at least by visual comparison to other tanks I have seen. However I only have a single Jebo SLW-10 pump , which is located low on the side of the tank where the torches are located. They do not get much direct flow from it, but perhaps I should get a second pump for the other side of the tank and run them both at a reduced speed/power setting? (my wife loves when I spend more money on my tank...lol)

Thats a happy torch. Extension will vary day to day, and depending in flow and lighting. I wouldnt mess around with things too much if everything else in the tank is good. You'll probably see it open up more eventually.

You can put the Jebo on a low freq/flow and then set it on cross-flow. That way it'll have the "calm" and the bit more "wave". You can put this a bit higher up in the tank and point it in a 45 degree angle to create surface agitation as well... or you could go out of your way and spend more money, but that's honestly up to you.

That is how I originally had the Jebo set up in my tank, however I was having flow issues in some areas and getting a lot of Cyano (still combating it, but it is much better after lowering the Jebo to create more flow near the sandbed). I now have the Jebo low and near the back of the tank, creating flow around the rock work and near the sand bed. I have the two return nozzles providing surface agitation. This setup has help a lot with the Cyano, but it does require the Jebo to be on a higher freq/power setting.
