Hey all,

I have had my first torch for a little over a month now and the base was always slightly receded from the frag. In the past week it seems to be receding slightly more. Both heads still extend upwards of 5 plus inches.
I’ve heard they can look strange during a split, could this be it?

If your talking about the flesh receding from the bottom upwards, that’s not a good thing.
We want that flesh to be white, and down the branch.

Yes, I am talking about the flesh. It always showed some of the skeleton but it appears it is ever so slightly getting worse.

The skeleton is looking almost green, would it be fighting with algae? It is in a lower light/medium flow area.
Want to ask some questions before it gets too late to help.

Whole system is only about two months old (used all live rock from ocean) and parameters have been stable since the first week. Pretty much test daily if not twice because of newness.
Alk 8.3
Calcium 410-420
Mag 1250
Phosphate .08
Nitrates 1 to 3
Ammonia has never registered.
I know nitrates are on the lower side but have never budged no matter how much I feed.

Looks fine to me, as long as you have at least an inch of flesh that isn’t rapidly receding, it’s healthy. Seeing that it’s green past the flesh means it’s only very slowly receded, which will happen normally as the torch grows “taller” (you aren’t going to have 4” of flesh as the torch grows taller/longer). As long as you don’t see white skeleton at the bottom (from a rapidly receding base), you’re likely fine.

That’s good to hear. The flesh has receded about an inch above the frag bottom now but it has been growing taller pretty rapidly. Today during the water change, it closed up for the first time in a while. I saw that one head split and it appears the other one is starting also.
