Torches Are Tough!!!

Aussie gold are particularly finicky, most torch collectors won’t even buy them anymore because of your experience. They’ll usually be perfectly fine for 3-6-12 months and then out of nowhere they die for no real reason. You can find the rare post about someone who’s had one for years but true AG that survive long term are few and far between

Run your tank temp cooler. I went from 78 to 76-77 and saw improvement with Euphyllia. Guy at my LFS saw same result.

Bacteria in general reproduces slower at lower temps. Lowering the temp in the tank is a good way to fight things like BJD, or at least slow them down like @Scorpius said. Just have to do it slowly or you'll hurt the torches that way as well.

I've struggled with Australian torches. Indo torches grow quickly in my tank, but Aussie torches look good for a few months and then decline. I haven't been able to figure it out so I've decided to stick with Indo (preferably aquacultured) torches only. Unfortunately there's some nice color combos I've only seen in Aussie stuff.

Ugh, I miss my Aussie pink torch, I bought it for 60$ 2 years ago, I got really busy with college and lost the coral a few months ago. That coral was the show piece of my tank it opened to the size of a large grapefruit. To be honest, I don't think I could find a coral of that size for 60$ anymore.

Likely using a clip on the phone like the ones PolypLab, Orphek, and many other companies put their name on and sell. Usually come with a yellow, orange, and macro lenses that screw onto the provided clip. You can also pop a lens out of a pair or orange lens glasses and hold it over the camera… or you can even cut an orange prescription bottle down to fit over the camera lens.

PO4 Swing should’ve noticeably bothered the SPS before killing the torch. I would have to think it’s more of an issue of being an Aussie Gold rather than a system swing if all the other corals appear normal.

9 months old 80 gallon with 9 fish and 10- 15% wc weekly and not many corals like 11 different kinds softy/ lps/ easy sps all seem to be doing well except 3 torches slow decline and one very fast buy put fast one down to got damaged in bag on drive home as didnt see damage to flesh when asked lfs guy to lift it up but sm it soon as put In tank after dipped it in nt labs coral dip.

My Torch worried my this morning. Most deflated I've seen him. He's recently started to split.
But back to his old happy self now.
The other day a chromis bit off an end in a feeding frenzy. Spat it out very quick.
He's been in a month now

I think wild ones are very hard to keep in newer tanks and will decline with slightly off parameters.

I take my pictures through one of the lenses in a pair of UV coral glasses. They cost $10-$15.
the first picture of my tank is without the glasses and the second is with with no lighting changes.
(I was gifted a small sunk submarine and the person is coming, so I put it in the tank for their visit. Lol)

I had two torches that responded very well in my tank, one was a Cotton Candy I bought at reef-a-palooza for $125.
I put them together and they started to grow so well, they began stinging my favorite montipora so I sold them for about $50 less than I paid before their growth. I immediately regretted it.
So, today, I got a great deal on a small Dragon Soul. Fingers crossed.

Torches are very difficult corals to keep. Very susceptible to Alk/Calc and nutrient swings. If these parameters aren’t tightly dialed in then there will be problems.

Had this torch for about 10 months and then I lost it due to a PO4 swing. Heartbreaking!

Totally agree. I picked up a new info-gold torch for my tank and after three weeks overnight it just started to shows signs of stress in in two days it was gone. The tank is eight years old, 120 gallon mixed reef. I have a blacklight torch and frogspawn that has been in there for 6 years and they are just fine. Parameters were stable as well. Do not get it.
