OK, so this may have happen to hundreds of you and I just never heard of it but I am bit shocked at the survivability of snails. My routine to clean filter socks is soaking them in water and peroxide for a few days, run 2 cycles in washing machine(stop, before you criticize, it is dedicated for this kind of cleaning, I would not put these where I wash my clothes), then I put them on the shelf until needed. They come out bleach white every time. So, the first time I did this I forgot to check the socks for life and threw them in the bucket of peroxide/water. When it was time to re-use them I took a look inside and saw about a dozen small black snails between the two. I figured after soaking in peroxide, going through the wash twice, which of course does not use RODI, then on the shelf for a week or so, they would be dead. I gathered them up and tossed them in DT anyway. Every single one of them was moving within a min of landing on the bottom. I did not expect this. I guess when they seal themselves in their shell they can survive quite a bit of time in there.
Just thought it was interesting and worth telling :)

What species of snail is this?
Honestly not sure. Little black guys. Purchased from reefcleaners about 6 months ago. Attached a pic. Snail is circled on an urchin.

Looks like a dwarf cerith. Would never had thought one could survive through all that.

They are from tidal zones I think, but surviving all of that is amazing! Now I know why some suppliers ship them in wet paper towels.

Yes, that sounds right. Kind of expected responses to be more like "yeah, everyone knows that about snails" so I am pleased to hear some of you found it interesting :D

Funny you say that because I do remember when I received them I was a bit disappointed in the wet paper towel mess. Now, like you, I understand why they do it and why there is no reason to send a bag of water with them.
