Training Slowflake Pair to Host: Video

it was much easier to train clowns in my old 34g all i had to do was drop food in the nem and they go for it and eventually it stuck but with the 120g it wasn't even close to happening so i caught them and trying this method..

mine are like that too. those tank raised don't know how to host.. the easiest way is to get a clown from AC's Anemone tank, they know how to do it, and they will "teach" others.

this is a great method... you can also use this trick to keep different species of clowns in the same tank... not necessarily to get them to host... but if you put them in a confined area with a piece of coral... or anything like that... they will become comfortable around it... so when you release the clowns into the main display... they will stay near the object you used... its a great way to keep clowns from becoming territorial... and spread them around in your tank ;)

-thats the rumor anyway ;)

What kind of basket was that and have they taken to the anemone yet?

its one of those lee's breeder net i got from the LFS..

the 1st time i put them there was for about 3 hrs (also when i took the video). they looked like they were ready to be released. they were nibbling on the tentacles and rubbing their bodies against it, but after putting them in the tank they swam by it soo may times but never went to it.
so yesterday around lunch i caught them and put them back.. hopefully when i get home from work i'll see them face palming the nem..

I have had luck with shining a flashlight beam on the nem at night and this has worked for me to get the clowns to host the nem, They seem to be drawn to it by the light!

Agree this works for me to. But make sure lights in the room are off to.

so no go yet.. they are still getting used to it.. i'm waiting until they start motorboating the nem before releasing them to the display.
so last night i put the other nem into the basket..

I've used this method many times with success only problem I've ever had was putting more than 1 nem in at once. I ended up with one clown hosting one nem and the other hosting the other and that made it twice as hard to get the clowns to pair up.

i see your point.. the 2 nems were once 1.. and they both reside on the same rock...

Had a Coral banded shrimp teach one of my clowns to host a frogspawn. Was the only protection it had from the shrimp once the ******* got hostile. Unfurtunately I lost a black O. Clown to it for the juvi regular O. clown to take to the coral. The shrimp got moved to my punishment tank.... 12 gallon with a mantis. Not much survives the mantis.

old video better late than never..
when i released them into the tank they went back into the corner so this was my second attempt to getting them hosing..

that just never gets old huh? That sunburst is way kewl man. My clowns started hosting my frogspawn a month ago all by themselves. Of course it took a year for them to do it.

The reason clown wont host is they feel safe because there really are not predators in a reef. It’s also the same reason most schooling fish like anthias and others don’t school.

They simply are not afraid. You need to add a barracuda to the tank and see how fast they move into an anemone.
Seriously though I hate to say it scaring them works or creating an enivorment so they dont aways feel safe..

The thing about tank raised fish is they are not afraid of you because they are used to humans and also used to being moved from tank to tank. Even if through other methods you manage to get tank raised to host they usually won’t do it very often and may only do it at night or occasionally. They also will wander farther from their host again because they are not afraid.

Also you never want to force them into a anemone they can get stung if they have never been acclimated to a anemone. This can be seen by black spots on them sometime.

Excellent info shred5. thanks for sharing

Dave very correct.. they only host when spooked.. but they goto the frogspawn instead of the nem

but at least i'm happy they know there is a nem there and will host when its time..

the only pair of clowns i had that took to nems like ducks to water were my mean blood drawing GSM pair..

this is quick video of them before i sold them..
