Within 5 months I'm moving and transferring a 54 gallon corner reef tank to a 120 gallon tank that I just got. My question is can I transfer everything from the 54 gallon to the new tank when I move or will it be impossible? Because I would need to add more sand to the new tank obviously. I have 78 pounds of live rock in my current tank. My question is would I have to transfer my 54 gallon tank and just set that up and cycle my new 120 or would my tank be instantly cycled by adding all of my live rock and keeping some of my water? And is it possible to transfer live sand or should I just do all new sand?

I would recommend doing all new sand. Bring along all your rock with the fish. I would keep a bottle or 2 of Dr Tims bacteria or Biospira to add just in case you started seeing ammonia.

My wife and I moved a 120 into a 150 over a weekend. We keep all water except what was in the very bottom, ie when we started removing the sand. We actually keep all of the sand and combined it with some new aragonite. I have heard mixed reviews on keeping the sand. I would say that it probably depends on the depth as to whether you are disturbing anaerobic bacteria in a deep bed. All rocks that had coral were placed in styrofoam containers with trash bag liners. We started the tear down at 12pm on a Saturday, finished at 6pm, drove 8 hrs, and set-up the following Sunday finishing around 2pm. It was a long all nighter with traded shifts driving. As with everything in this hobby, time is of the essence.

I relocated a 75. +1 on keeping as much water as you can. I had so many "critters" and other things to research sand never really crossed my path... That said I would have ditched the old sand and kept 2-3 solo cups and put a pile on each side.
