I'm transferring my tank to a smaller tank with a sump, how do I do this seemlessly? I'm planning on grabbing a few of the rocks in the current tank and putting it in the fuge and getting new sand. I'm only transferring a few fish and some CUCs and two corals

I'm not sure what issues you are having trouble with. Just do it. Live rock to the sump is a snap. New sand in the DT is something to be careful with as it will make for cloudy water. The slower you can add water and protect the sand (maybe pouring the water onto a dinner plate sitting on the sand?), the less cloudiness you'll have. Transferring fish, CUC and coral shouldn't be anything other than normal acclimation.

Is there something in particular you are worried about?

a roadmap for you

More worried about bacteria and cycling? I won't have a near as many rocks because I'm going to a 25 gallon with 29 falling sump from a 60 gallon aio, I'm wondering if I should use new water or use some old? I'm worried about a spike in ammonia or something, especially since I'm using new rock work

It will be fine even if you downscale the live rock just use at least some of the old

all new water, no old water, the rocks have all you need is the secret. Even half your rocks, still enough for same fish we directly show it in these pages of work. Those are legit concerns we would not need the sand rinse thread if everyone wasn’t thinking the exact same concern about access.

Please document your work we will link it for prediction outcome #2113

Okay. Will do. I'm almost done with my sump. Can I use new sand? I want to use a bigger grain sand.

New sand is fine. If you were to use old sand, I'd certainly wash it well before using it.

BTW, I down sized from a 120g to a 40g and after 2 years I'm going back up to a 90g. But the 90g is a DIY because I wanted a tank that was 30" front to back. So I have some experience with changing tanks and moving rocks, sand, coral and other livestock.

Okay, sounds good. I'm going small because I rent. Eventually I want to go huge like 500-800gallons when I buy a home

Nice work on your tank!!! I know that @Ron Reefman has built multiple tanks over the years.

Everybody wants to go bigger and bigger. I did too. I went from a 30g to a 75g, to a 180g, added a 75g hexagon, added a 65g shallow reef, added a frag tank, because more than I wanted. I sold off tanks and switched to a 120g and a 40g. Then just the 40g.

A 500g to 800g tank sounds like fun, but it will be very expensive to keep up. Lots of maintenance and lots of replacement pumps and parts. Good luck.

Hey one thing, how long should I run the new tank with the old rocks before I add fish and coral?

We set up the new tank ready to go, as long as there's no clouding in the new tank from rocks or sand being moved. It's ready when setup as long as not cloudy

Got the rock transferred over into my sump, as well as all new water, waiting for the cloud to go away tonight and will try to add fish in the AM hopefully it all goes well, I have a few more rocks, but not sure if I want to put it all in my sump because I want to add macroalgae.

It's a 25 gallon Mr. Aqua drilled by me and a 29 gallon sump from petco as well as terribly silicone baffles that I made. The emergency overflow will be fixed soon, waiting to buy a 45 degree elbow. My pump is a orbit marine 1050 attached to a random flow nozzle and a vortech MP10

Hey which part is clouding above is it the rocks or sand

before you stock items we should make the new tank cloudless without any wait, just pure cloudless / clean it out first before filling up with corals

The live sand, I added that packet , it's clearing up pretty fast

So, it was clear after a few hours of using that bio magnet packet and I saw some dog hair on my new dry rock and blew it off which created a storm from the rock (I forgot to rinse the dry rock again after it dried) it's slightly cloudy again, should I wait to add the fish? I'm stupid for not rinsing the rock again... Should I look for another bio magnet bottle?

You should take the system apart and clean it. Drain off current water can reuse

rinse sand as shown in thread

rinse rocks as shown none of this harms a cycle. Reinstall cloudless system the water will clear fast with filtration

for thirty pages we deal with cloudy starts, and cloudy midlife issues like when a power head dislodges...you can start oppositely
