Transparent Shifting Glass

Hello fellow DIY ppl,

I saw on the internet that there are bathroom stalls and the like that when locked become translucent but when unlocked are transparent. Does anyone know if that can be done for an aquarium stand door? I rather like the look of my sump and plumbing and would like to be able to show it off but also want to be able to just enjoy the display.

Absolutely could be used. There would be a wire that could be cleverly hidden to the controller. The ones I've played with are all electronically triggered.

I've seen this on a shower and rimless door. They are too cool.

Do i have to buy the glass? can the glass be cut? is it something that i can make (Not the glass itself but the thing that does the thing that makes it shift)?

I don't know the exact mechanism. I THOUGHT it was an electronically conductive sheet, sandwiched between two pieces of glass. When current is run through it, it becomes opaque. So in that case I'm not sure if that would be the DIY part.

On my 120 Gallon Build the Stand has Frosted Glass Doors. I’m looking into Back Lighting the Doors with LED’s and using a PIR to turn them on when approaching the stand. BTW, have you seen the Mirrors with a TV Screen Imbedded in them? We stayed at a Fancy Hotel. My Wife as a joke turned it on . I came out of the Shower nd suddenly this guy appears, and starts talking about the Hotel and Area Attractions. Totally Freaked me out.

I think the mechanism at work here is a gas sandwiched between the panes of the glass that polarizes and depolarizes when a current is present. Unless that's changed, I would imagine anything like this would be hugely expensive.

But, like all sophisticated and innovative technologies, its initial iterations were expensive and general market awareness was low. The technology has changed from where it was originally gas in between two glass panels and now it is a PDLC film that is laminated in between two pieces of glass or the smart film can be applied to existing glass or any transparent surface.

Wow, that's cool. Lots of stuff being done these days with flexible film and display technologies. Had no idea this was one of the implementations.

most of the time it’s a film on the glass that you can put on like tint. Much cheaper than buying the glass with it attached already.
