Hi everyone,

Every year I go back him to Tampa for the holidays, and every year I take part in the thriving reef community by bringing home some frags from a few LFSs. The issue is that I always get stuck waiting to head back home on Friday after Thanksgiving because the reef shops don’t open until 10am or so. (Yes, I’m aware of how much this is a first world problem.) Anyway...I was explaining this to my wife on the way down and she suggested that I make something to avoid delaying our departure on Friday since we have a 10+ hour drive home. So then I spent the next couple of hours thinking about how to create a cheap & portable frag tank that can sit on the counter and let me view my frags, while also transporting them back home. As soon as we got into Tampa I went over to Target and found a perfect container. Then I ordered a cheap light, pump, heater, and some egg crate. I’ll have to cut the egg crate and will need to pick up some cured live rock, salt waters and some rodi for top off. But, with this, I think I’ll have no problem picking up frags on Wednesday and having them hang out until Friday morning. Is this excessive? Absolutely. But I’m excited to have something to work on in between basketball, football, turkey, and visiting fish stores.

Sorry for the toddler drawing here, but all I have is my iPad this week, and I’m certainly not an engineer anyway. But I still think it gets the point across.

Everything came in today and I hastily put it all together. Here’s the 95% finished product. Still need to pick up a piece of live rock, salt water, RODI for top off and a cheap frag to test this out. I’m pretty pleased with how this turned out. Only concern is that the super glue isn’t strong enough to stay standing straight up with the rock leaning against it.

If this works out, my plan is to keep a bag of seachem matrix seeded in the back of my main tank so that when I travel I just pull that out and I’m good to go. Other thing might be trying to figure out how to work a DIY ATO with an upside down water bottle.
