Tree Trunk for a Toadstool Stem!

The toadstool in the picture below had reached about 14-15". So, as my first fragging event ever, I trimmed around it's head and it's now about 6". That was a month or so ago and it has healed nicely and is doing well.

My question...can I cut the base of this thing down some? Hard to tell in this picture, but the stem/base is about 7" long and it has to be around 3" in circumference. Can I cut it to where the base is much shorter and more near the head? If that is okay, will the remaining stem only portion grow in to anything or does it simply get disposed? Hopefully my questions makes sense.

Your help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you to suggest this question. I been wondering for a while, one of my Toadstool trunk is very long and attached to another rock on top so I was ready to ask if it would be possible to cut the bottom trunk entirely.
Thank you for all the feedback.
