Trendy versus Timeless Corals: Which one for you and why?

Kinda a lighthearted topic here....

Brothers and sisters of reef we live in the day and age of "Trendy Corals!" (coral bling, the super colorful, super named, expensive variety) As if you didn't know! But even with the BLING CORALS abounding many of our reefs are still a house for those other corals we call "Timeless Corals." (the old school corals, the staple corals, the more reasonably priced corals)

Personally I am a fan of both types of corals and I choose to only house those corals that I really like or I get for free! :/ That being said I think this topic could make for a great discussion. So come one, come all and let us have a discussion for the ages! So answer me this please!


1. Do you prefer Trendy or Timeless corals?

2. What is your most favorite Trendy and most favorite Timeless coral?


Any closing arguments? (don't really argue though)

As long as Timeless = "Reasonably Priced" then yes, all about the timeless here.

Love the new adjective though...I'm not cheap, I just appreciate the "timeless" beauty.

Timeless as my main acros, red planet, oregon, cali, miagi torts, different birdsnests and of course some ORA favorites... but some trendy ones really add the pop and wow factor for me.

I'll take a Purple Monster, Pearlberry, Sapphire millie any day over some of the newer trendy corals

Trendy doesn't matter much in my overall system objective. As long as the "trendy" piece fits what I want for my system, then I'll buy it, but not at outrageous prices either.

Gotten over the "I have this and that in my system", . It's more about the experience than having everything costing $200+ in the tank (not doing this for the money or trying to sell coral from my system at ridiculous prices either). Now equipment is a different story altogether, .

More so timeless. I do have some trendy as well. My biggest factor is a coral that looks good , without a excessive blue light supplement. Some look exceptional with heavy blue, but not so much without. The timeless look good in most lighting. Some times looks worse under blue. I run 20 k halides, no other supplements. Hence my preference.

I have a Jawbreaker mother and a $10 bargain bin Discosoma shroom mother who colored up nicely into teal with tiny bright blue dots. So I would say both for my tank. If I like the look it goes in. The bargain bin shroom is now my oldest coral and a grandmother. She makes her rock prettier. The Jawbreaker is more striking and I hope will be as fruitful.

I save up for trendy corals and grab a few easier on the wallet timeless corals as well. Love my $30 blastos but the movement and volume of my $300 torches cant be beat.

well alot of the new trendy stuff will become timeless classics, as the timeless classics were once trendy. WD is a perfect example of a modern classic. Stuff like Vivid Rainbow and SSC or Pink Lemonade, all were popular back then, but their colors don't run. They're timeless.

I'll stick with standard old green hammer, browny torch thanks. I like the look of the trendy ones but the price puts me off even risking buying one as I couldn't live with the fact it might be dead in the morning. So I'll stick with what I have and look at all your lovely expensive corals. In your pictures.

Happy with what fits my tank, it has to fit spacially and aesthetically with its room mates.

i would have to say classic my top 5 would go something like shades of fall, pink lemonade, pink floyd , WD, HW.

I am good at killing Both (Trendy and Timeless) and it usually doesn't take much time.

I like taking a $10 frag that was half-bleached and turning into a thriving colony.

I have a "Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder" view. A trendy coral can be one I like or hate same for timeless coral.

I have a love for the jellybean chalice coral and a love for Neon green trumpet coral. Bounce mushrooms are something I like but not something I'd go out of my way for.

It all depends on my likes.
