Tri-Color Acros!!!!!!!! HELP

Keeping them alive is easy, keeping them colored up to the base has eluded me. Usually mine have grown like crazy, but only the tips have retained the deep purple color.

I agree they're pretty hardy but keeping them colored up sometimes is tricky. You know your tank parameters are good and your tank is healthy when your tricolors look good.

arent the tips the only part thats supposed to be purple on a tricolor?
otherwise it would just be a bonsai

Mine seems to be as easy to keep as all my other sps's. It's actually sitting on the bottom of the tank and looks great. It's grown like crazy too.

The one I have was in a display tank at one of my lfs for at least two years that I know of. The tank was lit with almost all actinic for most of that time and only actinics for a good while. While it was in that tank it looked like a rainbow. They took that tank down and now have the tricolor is in a tank with 14K hqi. It has purple tips and the rest is brown. I have three frags I gat of it a few weeks ago that had browned out after the move. They are now coloring up but so far only getting purple in places where the strongest light is hitting them. I have a pic I think. I will post it if I can find it.

they should color up nicely for you if you keep them up higher with decent flow, also 14 or 20K bulbs will give them better color

Potassium - Potassium - Potassium!!! I add human vitamins/potassium to my system and its amazing how the tri-color and other SPS gain color. It really brings out the blue. After adding the potassium it takes about 2-3 weeks to start seeing results.

What the dose per a gallon sounds interesting.

It works like a charm! I have (5) 100 gallon grow out tanks and put (5) 99mg pills in 2-3 times per week, most of the time 2 times per week. So, I would round that off to 1mg per gallon.
I just put the pills in the overflow and they disolve in the filter sock.
I also put 2500mg of Vitamin C in per week. It would equal out to 5mg per gallon. I use the same process for dosing.
For dosing I just use the cheap Vitamins from Wal-Mart.
I have been doing this for about 8 months now and the color on SPS and many LPS has really come alive. It seems as if the Vitamin C has helped zoanthids and palys maintain there color and health.

Since Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant and protects against oxidative stress I am thinking that the Vitamin C might help the coral heal from propagation much faster than usual. This is not a fact but I have noticed positive results.

reefer - any swings in alk. from using vit. c? do you dose more/same ever since starting potassium/vit c. dosing?

i have a 3" frag that has it's base grown out over the super glue, it has a super intense purple on the base and tips, and I even have some phosphates, maybe I an just lucky? oh as for the phosphates i am going to do something as soon as possible

I have never noticed a swing in ALK at all. I have heard that the ALK will swing if dosing vitamin C like many people do. I have always used the same dose. I use it more like an additive. I have never messed with raising and lowing the dose like many people dose vitamin C.

I feel that how I add vitamin C the levels of vitamin C stays rather stable in the system. I think that by adding and subtracting the dosage is what may cause the ALK to swing?

I just won a very nice colony (about the size of a baseball) at our local reef meeting. It browned out from the travel and stress. How long does it typically take to color back up? I got it near the top of the tank very close to a korila 3 (not blowing directly on it).

Anyone have a nice picture of a tri-color?

I never could get mine to color up, it was wild so who knows. Heres a nice pic of one of the frags from it that i grew out and still had no luck with color, so i made a frag plug holder out of it!
