Trident test different from Hanna

I am seeing a big difference between my Trident and Hanna ALK testing

I calibrated my trident earlier today
I ran an ALK test and still getting big differences
Trident is 8.48
Hanna is 8.9

is this a normal gap or could there be an issue with the trident

Normal my trident it never reads the same as Hannah and I’m not sure which one is correct

For giggles, I tested the Trident calibration fluid. The dkh is 8.42
the hanna tested it at 8.8

Tested the same way as you did and received the same results. I’m having issues with the magnesium readings

My Hanna Alkalinity has always been 1.0 dKH lower than my Salifert and Red Sea testing, but it is always consistent, so I make the adjustment and use the Hanna. The big concern is repeatability, you can make allowances for accuracy.

As long as you're in your target range and the Trident repeatability is good....you're golden.

This is why I sold my trident, I had nothing but problems with that novelty toy, it even has inconsistent readings with itself lol, calcium and magnesium read close enough but alkalinity has to be consistent and it’s just not with the trident, that’s why the ones that use the titration method are better they are more consistent and they read more closely with all the other testing kits, IF you keep the ph probe on them calibrated, also keep in mind that the calibration fluid you use for the trident is vastly unusable most of the time. When I had the trident I would use salifert kits to test 4 cups of my water And then input those parameters into the calibration on my trident and have it using my reef water as the calibration fluid that way it matched more with the kits that you can use off the shelf, my current alkalinity tester reads within 0.1 of my Hanna checker

Hanna is listed as +/- .3 dkh. Trident says +/- .05, so that may be some of it. Buy the hanna alk standard and check the meter. Then you will know which one is more accurate.

I did the same and sold my trident. Could not trust it enough to get a good baseline. I ended up getting a Alkatronic. Once it is calibrated and the reagent is mixed correctly. it is spot on with my Hanna.

Now all I pay attention to is the trends of My dkh. Easy to do when you have a trusted baseline

Yeah I couldn’t trust mine either, it’s especially worse after a bottle change, it seems that after you put the second bottle in it reads way off from the other bottle, I tried getting my hands on the alkatronic for five months but it’s never in stock, I would’ve loved to have an alkatronic though, I like how you can integrate it with a Ghl profilux, I ended up going a different route after having so many issues with the Trident

I totally agree with this assessment. I had the same experience as OP with my Hanna testing .5-.8 dKh higher then my trident. It also tests .5 higher than the calibration fluid for the trident (8.45 dKh standard measuring 9.0 in the Hanna).

I run my system at 9.0dkh and because of this, I would like it to run low rather than high so I just calibrated my trident to the value I got from my Hanna and left it there.

I have found the trident to be very consistent so I don’t mind the discrepency and now that I have established my own personal baseline (the Hanna which I know is high) determining adjustments and trends is consistent which is all we’re looking for.
